Oil burner firing on and off constantly.

One of my neighbours has oil fired central heating. They have the boiler in a shed out back and recently it's been firing on and off every 4 seconds. It goes on for hours. I've tried to catch up with them a few times but they live a few doors away and it's not always easy what with homework and dinners to be cooked etc.
I don't know what make of unit it is but it's only recently started doing this. My first thought would be a thermostat problem but I know very little about these systems. Any idea what could be the problem? It's really annoying.

Those sort of problems usually mean that its badly in need of a service.
When was it last serviced? Perhaps a pic of the boiler and surroundings might help.

    Thanks.
I understand but getting a picture would probably be impossible. I guessed that a service was needed alright.
Maybe the best thing for me to do is just call down for a chat.

Is this an annoyance for you or are you concerned for your neighbours? Depending on which, you might want to adopt a particular approach.

    Yeah, I hear you.
It's an annoyance when it's going on until 1 in the morning, but as a good neighbour, I'm also concerned.
I'll try to drop around to them this evening.

Im sure they will be happy you tell them this is happening.A boiler running like this can damage parts in the boiler.

They must know there is an issue. If I can feel it through the foundations a few doors away it must be very loud right beside their house.

Some people dont see it being a problem until it stops completely and their boiler will stop soon
