Just received this 2nd hand laptop with no mention of this screen issue

Would you say it is dust behind the screen or loads of damaged pixels?

I would presume it's some sort of screen issue. I don't see how it would be possible for dust to get under the panel in that way. And if it was dust, it would be visible when the screen is off, which I presume you have checked.

Where did you buy it? I'd be suspicious that the seller sold due to this issue....

If you could add photos of the screen when it is off that would help things...

    This is the item https://www.ebay.ie/itm/263460182504?ul_noapp=true

The seller told me there was 2 white pressure marks on the screen which there are, but after contacting about this issue said they didn't notice it. Its the first thing I noticed when booting up for first time. Theres also some other issues with the screen like that blue spot in 1 of the pictures.

It's only really badly visible in dark scenes in a dark room but still noticeable in daylight when you already know its there. No cant see it when screen is off but wouldn't that be because there is no backlight to make it stand out? It does look alot like this which is dust apparently http://3dsforums.com/showthread-47584.html

no interest in changing parts of a 2nd hand laptop, either getting returned or a hefty partial refund. For the price I paid it should be almost like new.

If you paid top money, you were foolish to accept a machine with known screen defects

its not 'top money' but I was okay with the price considering what they described, this is not what they described. much much worse.

Open a PayPal dispute. Item not as described. You still.might struggle, I'm not sure how sales like this play out as caveat emptor may apply...

Eh no caveat emptor does not apply... there are laws for online shopping especially since I purchased it from a registered business. They have a 30 day return policy. I have no reason to open a paypal dispute yet, I'm more interested in finding out if its dust and if it is, would it be easily removed.

If you can't see it when it is off then the screen has a problem. Start the process of returning asap.

(I thought the seller was a single person/not a shop, hence my previous reply.)

if you paid by paypal you should be ok.
paypal are strong on the buyer's side.
as suggested - open an "item not as described dispute" now outlining your case.
that's if the seller won't accept a return.
it mentions scratches on lid in the description. it doesn't say anything about the screen being dodgy.

does say "30 days no quibble return policy" and if it's a defect then seller should pay return post although if the item didn't post to Ireland directly and you used parcelmotel or something then you may have to work that out.

seller does have a high feedback rating so should be ok to deal with for a return before opening a dispute.

Yeah I think its lots of stuck pixels as I took a zoomed in photo and they look green/red/blue/white.

I ended up opening a paypal dispute for partial refund and seller accepted fairly quickly which I think shows they were well aware of this issue. They seemed nice in emails shame they are selling dodgy stuff hoping the buyer doesn't notice.
