Dumbest Viral Challenges

I've just read about the "Hot Coil Challenge" in which people put their arm on the hot coils of an oven for as long as possible. It seems that challenges are getting dumber and dumber. The Tide Pod Challenge (eat a detergent pod) is another recent example.

Suddenly the trend of planking and the Harlem Shake don't seem so bad...

What are the dumbest viral challenges that you have heard of?

    🤪

They are great, I am a firm believer in Darwin awards.

Maybe its a Darwinian way to thin out the herd.

I haven't heard of them, must Google. I thought the drinking shots one was beyond stupid especially as you'd see people in their 30s and 40s doing it.

probably not dangerous but the cinnamon one was pretty dumb.

The Scat Challenge. I know you can eat it, but it tastes like sh1t. Although I'd eat a mile of Sharon Ni Bheolains sh1te to get near her.

There are easier ways to get near Sharon, and what you suggest would actually distance her from you.

'Viral Challenge' and 'Dumb' is a tautology.

Hadn't thought about that, thanks for the heads up.

I'd like to see the Russian roulette challenge go viral but with no empty cylinders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,161 ✭✭✭frag420

I’ve set up a “Fastest to floor” challenge!

Venue TBC but we are thinking The Shard!

Playing “the floor is lava” at random times was one, right?

The current ones make planking actually look pretty cool.

Apparently it's really dangerous as it burns your respiratory system once you start coughing.

That info is from a nurse but I haven't verfied it. Hence the apparently!

They're all fucking dumb. Getting cold water thrown over you. Fucking dumb.
Having to stand still. Fucking dumb. Drink a bottle of some vile liquor. Fucking dumb.
Lip syncing a song. Fucking dumb. All the ones I thankfully can't remember. Fucking dumb.

Be great if we could get 'kind gestures' going viral.
Might get some of these clowns taking time out to do something nice to other people instead of focusing on themselves.

...and harvest said kind gesture for as many likes, thanks and upvotes as possible.

    From the journal "Pediatrics"
However, attempts to swallow a large quantity of dry cinnamon carry a real risk of aspiration. At least 30 participants nationwide have required medical attention.6
Cinnamon inhalation can cause pulmonary inflammation, predisposing airways to epitheliallesions and scarring. Aspirated powder entering the upper airways can cause inflammation and, in more severe cases, aspiration pneumonia.

    So yeah, not that innocent!

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

It's a small price to pay. These idiots eating tide pods and all the other nonsense are doing it for the exact same reason. At least some money went to charity with things like the ice bucket challenge.

    🤪

The ice bucket challenge stands apart in that it raised a good bit of money for motor neuron disease. But you're right, most of them are pretty stupid.

Ice bucket challenge. Simpletons following Bressie or some other goon celeb.

Ice bucket challenge. Simpletons following Bressie or some other goon celeb.

Raised a load of money for charity pal, and was done in good spirits by people who participated. Don’t know what Bressie had to do with it. You just want to give out about something???

ie bucket challenge was stupid but not really dangerous.
that pod challenge thing is ridicules. what idiot thought that would be a good idea.

It's really only the viral aspect that's new, there have always been idiots willing to do stupid things for attention. Back in school there were lads who would jump off roofs or hold on to bangers

Calling it the 'hot coil challenge' is just ridiculous clickbait. It's a video of a guy doing something incredibly stupid....there are any amount of videos like that, and worse, out there. There will always be people out there willing to do stupid things for no real reason other than their few seconds of fame....and as someone above pointed out, people have been at it long before the internet was around, too.

There are no videos linked to this 'hot coil challenge' other than that one, yet already there's articles about 'People being scarred for life attempting latest challenge'....and it also just links back to that single video. They're feeding this crap and encouraging it with articles like that, saying one thing whilst blatantly hoping others follow suit.

As stupid as people think the ice bucket challenge was, it raised €1.6m in Ireland which was put to excellent use.

Challenges arent getting dumber, just the people thinking up of them and doing them. The ice bucket thing wasnt so bad tbh although there was cases of hypothermia and shock from them (minority id imagine), but you had the neck nomination and this latest dumb shít

tide pod challenge. Jesus wept. :(

It gets worse. Some politicians have proposed a law to make tide pods seem less appetizing.
    http://abc7ny.com/politics/lawmakers-make-tide-pods-look-less-appetizing/3043393/

This needs a consumer protection law? How about some personal responsibility like an announcement to “stop being idiots”.

Some of the viral emails weren't a challenge but still highlighted peoples stupidity; forward this and Microsoft will pay an amount to a charity etc and (my favourite) if you are being mugged at an atm, entering your PIN in reverse order will summon the police.
