Grounds for dismissal

    Hi,
    If it is proven that a manager is allowing a staff member to steal from a business, is this sufficient grounds for dismissal of the manager?

    Theft is a matter for the Gardai and the justice system.
    Unless an employer has established beyond reasonable doubt that a theft has taken place at all, no dismissals should be taking place at all.

    It’s grounds for an investigation plus getting the Garda involved.

    The investigation may result in disciplinary action uonto and including dismissal. In cases of gross misconduct it may be acceptable to move straight to dismissal.

    The company may want to suspend the employee during the investigation but it would usually be on full pay.

    The crux of this case would be actual hard evidence that the manager was indeed colluding with the employee, word of mouth or circumstantial evidence would unlikely be sufficient to make a dismissal stick.

    Depends.
    On one hand you would expect someone to get fired for stealing. But on the other it really depends. How well in is this manager? Whats been stolen? Can it be actually proven this person is stealing without any dispute? Can it be proven concrete the manager knew?

    If you are talking about company funds or something major then absolutely someone is gonna get fired. If it's some supplies here and there then a slap on the wrist can happen.

    To give you a random example when plumbers work for a company they love taking copper for scrap. It can be the pipes they didn't use (which are told to return) It can also be the old pipes and boiler they are also meant to bring back for scrap.
    Everyone knows they do it. Proving it and how much they did it is another story.
