When to pleach trees

    Hi all,

I've bought some rootballed hornbeams which I am about to plant.
They are about 10ft tall at the moment.
My intention is to make a small ( but tall ) pleached hedge from them.

At what point should I start the pleaching process.
They look to be too small at the moment and I doubt the few branches at the top could even support the frame.

Does anyone know the best route to success here ?
plant and wait till they are a bit more mature?
Pleach now at a low level and let the tree carry the frame skyward as the tree grows ?

    Thanks for your help
