    Hi all,

On the hunt for a new and fairly specific on what I want if anyone can steer me in the right direction or know of anything similar for sale!

    Looking for a White 2011 520D M Sport Auto w/ paddle shift.

Preferably would prefer pro-nav but if the price is decent then I will consider one without!

I'm down south of the country so if anyone knows any for sale around here let me know.

    Cheers!

What sort of money are you thinking of spending?

To get that that colour and paddle shift is really narrowing your search.

    Hey,

I would be looking to spend around the 15k mark.

I have looked at 2 so far within budget with decent spec.

However one had over a 100k without the timing chain being replaced and the other is in a local dealer but had no service book and the engine seemed to have a lot of vibration on idle.

I'm a bit specific with the colour but my twin has a carbon black F10 and I don't think it would go down to well if I had the same..

Go to the UK where you have a better chance of getting the spec you want.

I might be in the UK next week so if there is anything around where I'm staying I might take a look.

Only problem for me is insurance, my current insurer won't swap over from a 1.4 to a 2.0 diesel (3rd party fire a theft policy). Yet, with Aviva I can get fully comprehensive on a F10 with step back no claims protection for 200 euros cheaper, so I will be taking out a new policy which I won't be doing until I actually buy the car.

Are you fixed on auto or would you consider a manual?

UK is a good shout for cars alright if your over.

Would have to be auto, even from a re-sale perspective would be a lot easier to shift an auto.

I have a 2011 msport f11 and like you the extras I wanted:

    - pro nav
    - sports auto (with paddles)
    - privacy glass

As others have said go to UK but also note you can retrofit the pro nav on the 2011 model for about €900 - all genuine BMW brand new kit. So you could just buy one with the sports auto.

I would not drive an f10 without the pro nav as the smaller screen looks really cheap and nasty and ruins the interior IMO.

Completely agree. I'd buy a standard f10 msport and the only extra would be the pro nav I'd require. Wouldn't buy without. It was designed for pro nav and the plastic surrounds without it just remind you it's missing something. That said if you could get it for right price a retrofit would be a valuable option might even get some of it back come resale time.

I'd be looking for one with adaptive xenon headlights and heated seats too which were optional extras back in 2011.

Are these not ticking time bombs?

Love the look of them and have always been tempted, but the whole timimng chain issue puts me right off....

March 2011 front heated seats became standard.

Apparently fixed late 2011 but reports of some having issues into 2012. you could buy a 2012 one or later.

mine is Oct-11 build with 130k kms on it and never had an issue, so far anyway.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but it seems the right place to ask....... I’ve an option to buy a 2010 F10 2.0ltr diesel, manual, that’s been on the family for the last five years. It’s never missed a beat and has been looked after and serviced by an Indy on the button. Is there a certain age/mileage that the timing chain problem is more likely, and does anyone know what % of that engine actually developed timing chain issues?
    Thanks.

If it's been in your family in your years and has had no trouble and you like the car then I would see no issue with buying.

As for the timing chain you can't really put an estimate on it I do know however that the manuals are a bit more prone due to the gear changes not being as smooth.

I have just bought a lowish mileage 2011 and all seems good but I am bringing to main dealer tomorrow to get it checked out anyways for peace of mind.

Hard to tell if or when a chain might go, they do appear to have symptoms before it does go so might be worth getting the car checked out. I just got a 520d myself in the last few days and was worried about getting one that could potentially need a chain so I only looked at 2012 + cars eventually settling on a 2013 with the N47T engine which is not known to have the timing chain issue.
I believe the job with a BMW specialist is not that expensive to do proactively so that might be worth a look and save the worry of it happening in the future.. However you only ever hear about this problem when it happens so the whole internet search might be misleading somewhat, Im sure there are plenty of 5 series that havent or will never have this issue.

Have you test driven an auto? To be honest there's no way I'd buy the car in manual - the auto box is brilliant and if you're worried about resale the manual would be very difficult to sell on.

In fairness I’m not actively looking for a car, but this one is about to be traded , so depending on the value being offered by garages, I will then pay the same value in cash so my relative may also get a better deal as a cash buyer in a garage. I wouldn’t be doing huge mileage in it, ( I use my motorbike mostly, and the OH has a new SUV), but it’s a very comfortable motor to drive, my intention would be to hold on to it as a second car for a long time, so resale isn’t a huge factor this time.

Timing chain in an Indy place is about €1500-1700. It’s not game over type money if you find a 2011 at the right price. €5,000 to do in a BMW dealer.

Any car with the N47 engine can have that problem, BMW officially thinks no car built after March 2011 has a problem but there are F30s with chain failures.

Only thing you can do is change the oil every 15,000 km - it doesn't mean it won't happen, but it gives you a better chance.

I'm open to correction here, but is the problem not with the chain but the sprocket on the crankshaft?
From what I have read, the sprocket on the crank is machined as part of the crank, and the material of the crank is not compatible with the material of the chain causing the teeth on the crank sprocket to sharpen over time and resulting in wear on the chain?

Yes, that's the issue. The chain itself is a good quality part. N57 engines don't have the problem (despite being more or less the same engine just with two extra cylinders) unless you do something silly like completely ignore the service intervals, because of a much higher oil capacity (they take 9 litres of oil, the N47 takes 5.2 litres) and the superior refinement of a straight six.
