    Volkswagen Caddy 05 SDI
Serious black smoke and no power
No smoke when van is idle
It’s failed the DOE because the Engine management light is on I got the light turned off a few times but keeps popping on again the fault is saying faulty EGR I Bought a brand new EGR valve still no change
I disconnected a small suction pipe that goes to the EGR which I think controls open/close of the EGR
Since this the smoke has gone and the van runs fine but this is only a quick fix to get me from A to B and will not pass the DOE like this.
Please any help/suggestions very much appreciated
    Thanks

Follow that suction pipe back and you will find a solenoid valve with a 2 pin plug on it. They often break the wires going to that plug. Or the valve could be faulty and allowing vacuum through all the time causing your EGR to be constantly open which would explain the smoke and lack of power.

Yea you could be right because when I disconnect the suction pipe which I think closes the valve there is no smoke.
    I’ll investigate it further.
    Cheers George

Also disconnect that return/solenoid valve and spray all connections with Electronic IPA Switch cleaner spray, let it sit for a few min's until the cleaner evaporates...
It irks me that VW(VAG Group)can't pinpoint were the actual fault is, like it's EGR!? Emmmm numerous components pipes, valves, sensors etc etc leading to the EGR throw up the same fault.....
Like there's you after BUYING a new EGR.. And for what.
    Hope you get sorted...
