    Hi

I sold a car October of last year. It was running fine but the alternator went about 4 days after I sold it so I offered to take it back and refund his money. The log was sent off already so he sent it back the change of ownership form with my details. There was about 9 months tax due before I sold it.

My question is if I get this car on the road for myself do I have to pay the previous 9 months before I sold it plus the 3 or so months its been off the road?

    Not sure how this works.

    Thanks in advance

Only if it never went out of your name.

If it was sold and in another name then that's cleared.

When you got it back you had 22 days to sign off the road.
Nothing stopping you doing the same with a family member and taxing then buy back.

    Thanks punisher5112

Do they not check names, address etc? Thought they would be looking out for transactions like that

If you sell car and buy it back tax arrears are erased.
The govt is not too bothered about it right now, but they probably will sort it at some point.

By the sounds of it you are in the clear. You sold it, and bought it back essentially.

You were mad to do anything like this... I would have told this person where to go... but live and learn.

    Private sale no come back.

Up to them to check all in order.

You are clear just sell cough cough again.

Buy it back or tax when changes names then buy back at later date if want to get on road quick.
