Pet Pygmy goats

    Do you need a herd number to own pet Pygmy goats I have a lot of land around my house and sheds with running water none of that is the issue I just need to know basically do I need a herd number to own a small breed Pygmy goat or maybe two

    Yes you do need a flock/herd number issued by DAFM under animal health and welfare legislation.
    Here is a link to the Depts website, click on the links for information and a pdf form that you can print off, fill in and send to your local District Veterinary office (DVO) to apply.

    Your yearly requirements would be submitting the sheep and goat census

    Other than the dept will send out someone when you apply to give the place a once over

    Sorry now forgive my stupidity I’m still unclear so will I have to have a house inspection in order to get everything sorted?

    Yes. Normally first time applicants will receive a visit from a Dept Veterinary officer to ensure that appropriate facilities are in place, shelter/shed, water and handling facilities/crush if required and stock proof fencing.
    However people applying for a equine number or poultry flock number (to keep a small number/backyard/smallholding) may not get a visit.
