There was a thread a couple weeks back inviting salesmen to reveal a few truths....cant find that one but this could be helpful if people are interested.

    Bumping this.
    It’s an interesting thread.

    Very!

It's interesting as it confirms a lot of things that people were in disbelief over in certain threads previously, like €1000 being a good profit to take from a sale and cars being sold at cost or a slight loss to meet manufacturer targets etc.

I'm sure whoever is doing it is a regular here, but we may never know.

I find it hard to accept that a premium car dealership is happy with about 1500 euro profit turning around a trade in.
In my experience even allowing for service tyres etc a car might need the margin is much higher.

Another bump for a good thread.

I was in a car sales yard this year. The guy had fresh yellow regs out the front with a few 2013 upwards irish reg cars too. Out the back he had upwards of thirty older cars in good shape, trade ins I thought . Why is he holding all these older ones for? How is the money made on these. Ive a clean 2001 golf tdi and I can't get a grand for it. So these couldn't be worth too much more. What am I missing?

I would have thought the same but it seems to be the case from my experience. I got a trade in value of €24,500 on my last car in November. It's now for sale for €25,995.

Edit: Also worth noting that they resprayed the front bumper due to stone chippings, refurbed the front 2 alloys and needed 2 new rear tyres. Not much change from €1495 in that!

Trade-in values can be distorted as the price of the car your buying could be inflated to allow the dealer to give a more attractive trade-in allowance.

All bmw dealer prices in Ireland are inflated bazz!

Off topic but did you make any queries yourself about trading on a 430d? I think you mentioned a few months back you were waiting on a dealer to get back to you? Interested to know how you got on.

I did enquire and unsurprisingly they wanted stupid money which I wasn't willing to pay. One south Dublin main dealer wanted 25k to trade up from a 2014 520d to a 2016 430d GC which ironically was brought in from the UK.

Resale values of used cars here have gone to the dogs yet dealers seem to be keeping the prices of their stock high and static. It's a no wonder why importing from the UK is at an all time high. I got the car serviced last month so I'll be keeping it for a while. Might see if I can sell it privately later in the year and head over across the Irish Sea.

I take you didn't go south so?

I didn't to be fair JBJ but with the cost to change prices I was getting elsewhere and having the car serviced last month and **** weather, the yearning to change has worn off with me for at least the short term. I still think having a trade-in is a major disadvantage.
