Abandoned line or station?

    Hi everyone.

Can anyone recommend an abandoned line or station?
Need to do a few film shots (not professional)
I’m based in Dublin so the closer the better
I’ve found Adare station which looks perfect, but it’s a 2 hour drive and I don’t know how accessible it would be once I got there
Anyone familiar with this abandoned station? Can I get to it safely
If it’s accessible then I’d probably head there, are the public allowed to visit?

Looking for something old but nice, (not the graffiti, broken glass look) :-)

Any help or ideas would be really great
    Thanks

Perhaps the Navan to Kingscourt line.

In theory, a station on a disused line such as Adare or the Navan-Kingscourt are still operational so to go filming at one is technically a trespass. While CIE wouldn't come after you on the day, you may find that a nosey neighbour or two may poke their nose into your goings on so be mindful if you are asked to move on. That aside, most of the stations on such lines will be be in poor condition or fenced off so they may not do it for you.

As an alternative, have a look at Belturbet station. It's structure has been well preserved and restored, it has a little bit of track down plus it is not too far from Dublin. Also, Downpatrick Station may be of use to you.

Thanks for your replies and suggestions
I certainly don’t want to trespass anywhere

    Thanks again

There’s a ‘new’ railway station in athlone. Afaik the ‘ old’ station is in use as a ‘goods’ depot so they might consent to taking photos there. If your driving it’s on the old Galway Road. Not very pretty though.

The "old" station is on the mainline and has been closed since the mid 80's. Chances of access to it would be zero.

The old station in Moate has been cleaned up a lot, and is part of the greenway, so you might be able to access it here (The pics are old, it's in a much better condition than the pics here)

    That looks perfect
I assume to get onto the tracks I would need special permission?
Who would be the best person to contact? any ideas

    Many thanks for your time

It's part of the greenway, they have added a lane of tarmac alongside the rail line (that might make it less realistic). You shouldn't need permision to access the greenway itself, so unless you mean going into the station, then I wouldn't know.

    Amazing
Thank you so much, that looks like I could make it work
Will check it out over the weekend.
    Many thanks everyone

Newcastle, Co Wicklow, is a very pleasant station building, closed about 1963, tastefully restored as a private dwelling. It is beside a level crossing to the beach, so can be photographed from at least two angles.
Three miles towards Wicklow, is another station house, closed 1875, also a private house.

Further on there is the station building at Avoca, the remains of Woodenbridge, and stations of the Shillelagh branch, mostly well preserved.

Alternatively you could try some of the old stations of the Sallins - Tullow branch, Baltinglass is especially nice, now used as co-op, warehouse centre.
Going northwards, Ardee is a similar setup, a station building used for commercial purposes, in this case for selling tractors / farm machinery.
