Motor Tax - Imported from NI

    So I bought a car from NI and its going for the VRT inspection in a few days. I am not driving it on the roads yet.
    • Car delivered and paid for on Thur 1st Feb.
    • Going to transfer insurance from my current car to the new one for Wednesday 7th, and start driving it on the road
    • I have already booked the VRT appointment for Thur 8th Feb.

    If I rock up to the motor tax office after the VRT inspection on Thursday can I pay the Tax and get the Tax disk the same day?
    I have to wait 24 hours until i will be able to tax it online I believe.
    Even if I have to wait 24 hours can I go into the motor tax office on Friday to pay and get it then.
    Otherwise it wont be posted out to me until after the weekend

    So what do I do in the limbo period without a tax disk?

    I will be going up to Dublin on Saturday 10th and I dont want to get clamped.
    So do I;
    • (A) Keep the NI reg plates (I believe I can drive on them for up to 3 days from getting the VRT done, and UK cars don't need to display a tax disk)
    • (B) Switch over to the Irish Plates but have no Tax disk?

    I'd rather have my Irish plates on to be honest though.

    You can only tax it the next working day, online or in the tax office. So you will have to wait until Friday the 9th(assuming you will be able to complete the registration on Thursday)

    So if you do register and get your reg Thursday, get your new plates on and go into the tax office Friday or tax online and print out the confirmation.
