    Hi all,
Lad in work upgraded to a GLA :D last week and has a 320d with 240k/kms going.
I'm in the market for a bangernomics style car and to me this fits the bill.
Anything I should watch out for on the car.
He's told me it has full history and runs perfectly.

    cheers.

    That's a good engine to have. I have a 2006 myself with 58kMiles/94k Km.

Have had no problems other than ABS module failure. It's an expensive fix (~€1500 for replacement). But i found a used one for €180.

    Things that i have done:
    - cleaned EGR valve
    - removed the swirl flaps and installed blanking plates (swirl flap pins can break and disintgrate the engine). Check if this has been done already. If not, then get some swirl flap blanking plates from PMW UK and replace.

    - while you've got all that open, change the glow plugs and
    - the crankcase oil breather filter to a vortex type filter

Plan on assigning up to 1 weekend for this if doing yourself.

I would suggest the above as a minimum just for peace of mind and you should have great driving. Sounds like quite a bit and sounds scary but really isn't if you have the tools and the time.
No DPF, so no worries about that. And this engine isn't susceptible to timing chain issues as with later versions.

If you are taking it out for a test drive, then try to get onto the motorway if possible. As you accelerate and change from 2nd to 3rd (when entering the motorway) and then when you change from 3rd to 4th keep an eye on the rear view mirror. If there is a cloud of black smoke then the EGR valve needs cleaning (as a minimum). Make sure you are accelerating (giving it a bit of welly) before you change.

There is a problem with BMW alloys cracking (happened to one of mine). If you can get car onto ramp then inspect from the rear of each wheel with a torch (obviously better if wheels are clean). If not too badly cracked then it can be welded.

Other than that i, remapped via a superchips bluefin unit, so upped the power from 163hp to about 190hp.
And i replaced the stock stereo with a Bluetooth version only 2 weeks ago.

What's the condition of the one you are considering?
It gives me hope that i can more than double existing mileage over the next several years while still maintaining an almost new car.

    Great post!
Condition is good. very clean car. It'll be Tuesday before I can test drive it though but I'll be definitely testing as you suggested.

As said check history on swirl flaps and also turbo filter e90's have upgraded versions of both but they're still not 100% reliable. If neither have been done then I'd recommend getting them sorted asap. Also look to see how regularly the oil was changed.

These have a different turbo to the e46 m47 they prefer regular oil changes but are reliable once this is the case. As said the filter was the main issue.

Aside from that listen/look for flywheel rattle and knocks in the suspension, also juddery brakes as Bmw's are great at warping discs.

He's told me he's just replaced the rear discs.
I'll ask him later about the swirl flaps and turbo filter.
