Pure telecom router

I have pure telecom and while my download speed on wired connections is pretty good my wireless is crap and unreliable.

The router they gave me is a Technicolor TG588v I'm almost certain.

I was planning on upgrading anyway as I am going to install a wireless camera system around me property.

I was going to get this

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00HDK4GAK?aaxitk=oqAdKrc8YIQC6KImiANOSQ&pd_rd_i=B00HDK4GAK&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_p=1665453947&pd_rd_wg=Hk0nx&pf_rd_r=NARS1VRT14MP8NT31SGK&pf_rd_s=mobile-sx-top-slot&pf_rd_t=9701&pd_rd_w=4DcWI&pf_rd_i=router&pd_rd_r=b93e78a0-e5f0-4ff1-a95d-91f8495a10d5&hsa_cr_id=3321890920002

Anyone have any experience with it or can recommend anything I should get?

    Thanks

The Wi-Fi on that router is not great alright. However, the VDSL side is not bad and the stats/management are both OK.

I'd recommend you put in a separate router for the Wi-Fi that gives you both 2.4 and 5 ghz channels and connect that to the Technicolor unit leaving it to deal with the internet connection.

My experience with Pure Telecom is that they wouldn't be great at providing Tech support to a non-Technicolor device in the event of a problem later.

I'm assuming here that the problem lies with the router and not with the device you're using.

The 1st thing I'd do is check if the Wi-Fi signal is better beside the Technicolor unit. If so, change the channel that the Wi-Fi is using. Try a few different channels and see if that changes anything.

Regarding a suitable router, much depends on the physical layout of your property and whether you have particular performance demands that need to be met. For me, any well regarded router that allows you to build multiple Wi-Fi nets in both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz ranges will improve your situation somewhat. However, it won't be a spectacular improvement but it may just get you connected in places and at a signal strength that you can't get from the Technicolor unit.

If you have the access, you could also consider placing the new router in a different part of the house and run a network cable between them. This would extend the overall blanket of Wi-Fi coverage in the house. For example, I have an old router that supports both 2.4 and 5 Ghz in one part of the house that is linked by a 60 ft length of cable to the Technicolor unit. I have set up 3 separate Wi-Fi nets (each working on a different channel) and use the two 2.4 nets to maximize coverage while relying on the single 5 Ghz net to support the devices that need the highest throughput. Remember that 2.4 nets are often interfered with by microwave and other appliances, but they maximize coverage at the expense of maximum throughput.

An alterrnative that also works well for me is the use of Wi-Fi power line adapters.

Well just had a browse of the router settings and it only has 2.4 wifi so id say thats half the problem straight away

I dont really have an option to run a network cable, since this is an old house the external walls are about 500mm thick and some of the internal walls wouldnt be far off it.

The cameras I need connected are mainly around my garage, which is about 10m-15m from the house. I think if I get a new router for the house and then a power line adaptor to the garage should solve it.

I adjusted a few settings in the router so i'll give them a proper test tonight and see if there's any difference

I am with pure telecom for some years now, always paid up and service was reasonable until some time after Christmas when service went down in Galways and was never right since. It's a real pain continually breaking down and long periods with no Internet. I phoned customer service this morning and was told it was the router. Pure telecom would replace it if I signed up for another contract or as the service technician said I could replace it myself with a cheap one - I had independent technician out who said the router was OK. My first experience with pure telecom was a desperately negative experience. The company was new when I joined on a promise from a representative that 'customer service' above and beyond any competition was guaranteed - when the customer service Representative asked "do you want help on any other issue, I laughed. I'm gone from this comany. Take the money and run as I review other options to get my broadband up and running again. I am furious with "Pure Telecom". A cowboy company with a customer service that leaves you in a worse state than when you called them. KMH5050

Just this week I got sorted. Used a power line kit to bring wifi over and still have the 3 ports on the actual device. Working a treat. I still have to tweak it a little but picking up wifi all over the house now.

I'm going to get another one and bring the wifi out to the garage. That should sort everything out then. I found cameras that create a wifi mesh back to the router so I can actually increase the range of security.

I'll find the Amazon link to it and post up later. I went for the mid range with the 2 wifi channels and seems to be great.

I'm off work today so I'll have a chance to test some PS4 multiplayer etc and see how it goes
