Missing Cat

    Hi.

My cat (2y/o~, male, not neutered) has been missing since Thursday morning. In the past, he's gone missing for a day or 36hrs when younger, and always came back (typically worse for wear, and wanting food and sleep).

I found him as a stray, dumped in a ditch about 18/19 months ago. At the start of January just gone, another stray turned up (female). I had her neutered immediately, and had booked the male in to be neutered Thursday morning. Alas, he opened the window in my bedroom (he managed to figure out how this is done by watching me) and haven't seen or heard him since. He was highly hormonal, all the signs of a cat seeking a partner (meowing, spraying outside, uncontrollable, no logic, etc). Those were directed at the new arrival first, but as soon as she was spayed, he had no interest (obvious reasons). So I'm thinking he went looking elsewhere. I don't know though.

Anyway, I'm wondering if 3-4 (or more) days is typical of male cats (who haven't been neutered) to spend away from their home in search of partner at this time of year, when females 6-8 months or so are coming into heat.

I might be answering my own questions here, but any expert or personal advice/experience would be welcomed. Thanks.

It's basically how long is a piece of string question. Yes an intact male may spend anything from 1h to a lifetime away; it all depends on what females in heat are around, if he got in a fight and is hiding under a bush waiting to feel better etc. as well as how far he strayed. There is no answer to your question in essence.

Thanks for the reply at least.

I don’t know about cats, but if it’s any comfort to you a few years back my doggo went AWOL for 4 days when there was a bitch in heat. Hope your cat makes it home soon!

I can confirm that female cats are coming into season early this year. I work in a TNR programme for feral cats and several of the cats have been in heat these last few weeks.

By the way, kittens as young as four months old can come in heat.

    I hope he comes back.

Thanks, I'd heard as much. Not a lot to do as a cat owner except wait. Nature deals with these things by itself. I had him scheduled to be neutered the day he went though, which is what pisses me off.

    Hope he comes back anyway.
