No, you need a policy number and expiry date to tax a car.
Having said that I don't know if there is any mechanism to check if either are valid.

However, in my experience if you're going to be pulled over without one of the three (tax, insurance or NCT) then insurance is the one most likely to end you up in court. And rightly so

When taxing a car on motortax.ie, the form that asks for insurance details is not validated at all beyond having x number of digits in the policy number.

That being said, it is illegal to drive a car without valid insurance, but you know this anyway.

It was a motorbike i was selling they asked for logbook as far as i remember , same goes like said above no verification goes into your insurance policy number , when the disk arrives your reg is on it is what matters :)

You can tax it online just fine, just put in any details for the insurance, the system does not actually verify the details.

He's right, i did it myself last summer, no questions asked.

The details you provide are uploaded onto their data base, this then forms part of the data to while the garda traffic corps have access to via ANPR, i never had an issue with it.

I have insurance, just not directly to the vehicle in question, i was using the full comp extension to drive it.

I dunno, I guess it's nice they saved you a bit of a headache in the tax office.
On the other hand I think we can assume that majority of the time someone is taxing a vehicle it's to actually use it. In which case maybe it wouldn't hurt if it couldn't be done without valid insurance details.

It's a bit of a strange system overall if you ask me.

So someone else can drive it on this party extension.
It would need tax and nct to be fully legal on the road for the other driver.

Might want to drive it using his driving other cars extension if the car isn't in his name.

Do most insurance companies not stipulate that the car is still covered by a policy? Or is that just some?

Mine have said that the other car DOES NOT need its own insurance policy.

I'm with them well over a decade though so i might be a special case :pac::pac::pac:

It was none until recently, I think aviva now say the other car has to be insured but they are the only one as far as I know.

Insurance is a pain in the hole :(

Would be so much easier if you could just insure a driver.

This is essentially how insurance works in Ireland, we insure a driver.Iit would be much better if you could just insure a car like in many other European counties. You can easily insure multiple cars, anyone can drive the car no messing with naming drivers etc etc. A much better way to do it.

It goes back to the days when you had to bring all your Doc's with you to tax the car.

    How so?

If that's the case why do I need a separate policy for each car I own? (despite only ever being able to drive one at a time)
Can't use NCB on a different policy etc. etc.?

If anything we insure a car and driver combination?

It's an even bigger pain when you see people successfully getting away without having it day in day out, we are the scapegoats for them in the event of an RTC.
