Applications closed before deadline

Hi all, I recently got a job alert possibly from public jobs.is. The deadline for applications is not until mid February but when I went to apply 2 days after I received the alert it said that 40 applications had been received and applications now closed.
I have never seen this happen before.
Is this a new thing? And is this actually legal given that we haven't reached the deadline yet?
    Thanks

Yea it's illegal.. according to statute 101.51210 of the free state act. Please make a complaint to mary lou mcdonalds and cc your parish priest. Thanks for bringing this matter to my attention.

    Honestly...why bother?

I asked a genuine question, I have never seen an application process been closed when it reached a set number.

Yes, I agree, if one hasn't something useful to add, why bother posting nonsense.
Have never seen this before but would like to know if it was mentioned as part of the application process.

Not mentioned in the email alert I got and when I go to the application page it now says application closed as 40 applications received. I have no idea what it said in the two days prior to this. It is with a public body.
I am trying hard to find a job and thought i was safe enough waiting a day or two as applications don't close until mid Feb. Does this mean now to be in with any chance of a job you have to apply immediately. Are we going back to the days when a queue of 100 people would be queueing outside a new business with cv's and applications.
In will look at the application again and maybe even ring the organisations HR department.

No, most public sector jobs are open for application up to closing date unless there is something in the application process which states, either closing date or reaching a specific number of applications, whichever happen first, might be best to read through the entire terms for future positions or get your application in as soon as you are notfied of it being advertised.

Not sure if it’s the same job or not but Waterways Ireland were looking for a clerical worker and it stated on the advert they would only accept the first 40 applications. I suppose all you can take from it is if you are interested enough you should try to apply straight away. I can understand the logistics behind it, cuts down on paperwork for them.

The only time I ever saw this happen was when applications for enumerators was opened and they closed the application after only 4 or 5 hours as thousands had applied, was really disappointed. I think sometimes they can state in a job ad that applications are open till such and such a date or until the relevant number of applications has been received in that case I suppose it is legal.
