According to Denis Lehane, Irish Examiner Farming; In Dungarvan mart Fr bull calves €65 to €175. AA bull calves €165 to €250. AA heifers making up to €285.

Better buy the ones offered here at €250, Ha. Looks like heifers might be a bit dearer than bulls.

A much better buy Bass. Even the price of yearlings, the OP should look at. Quicker to calving.

Not only that you can buy a heifers that will make bulling weight in April. Would consider Six Chx or Lmx heifers as well.

They must have been very poor suckler bred heifers at that price, or else he wanted to give um away.

The suckler bred heifers were off WH cows as the two HE were real HE red. I imagine the Lm were similar late calves. Lots of lads struggle to get calves like this to weight and often wean early. these were weaned and eating ration. I estimate they will kill 290-320kgs Dw in June '19. As R grade heifers they should be hitting 4.3/kg including bonus so 1300 euro is my estimate of what they will make at slaughter 1230-1300 euro

Nice turn there Bass but you are waiting along time for your money. Have you gone long term or do you not consider shot keep stock ?

August/ September calves, so calves born in September won't be a month old until October, october November December January. That's 4 months whatever way you look at it.

I vary my buying between weanlings and stores. Weanlings are very cheap to carry for the first winter. I find the weanlings I buy are the first cattle finished during the summer. Have not had heifers for 2-3 years but young lad bought a few runners last autumn. I have added these to them and they will be pit on 7-8 acres around the house at home.

The one big advantage a lad that works has is he can look at some long term cattle. If the average over 1200 they will leave a touch but if the price is as good as last June they will leave a nice twist if the kill as I think they will. As I work my time spend buying is limited so in general I look at cattle on a time over margin basis. I do not mind waiting to turn a decent profit rather than trying to twist cattle 2-3 time a year.

Now I considered them as fair a value as is out there at the moment ib what I was looking for. But mind you I bought them off a dealer who I imagine made a margin as well

An August/September calves mean that some calves were born in august and maybe even in late July in most terminology it would mean that calves were 4-6 months old. TBH I was just showing OP that there was other options compared to calves. With calves you have a larger risk of illness and mortality compared to what I was buying. In reality taking ilness and mortality in to account his calves are costing about 7-10% more than the buying price
