    2006 Passat 1.6 FSI
In winter time (about November) when the temperature drops the boots locks and wont open till springtime (about March), on the dash the boot open warning is seen but it is most definitely locked.

Is it complete lock replacement or a sensor and is there a manual boot release to open it to work on?

I suppose it doesn't freeze as we don't really have that weather here.
Could be moisture causing a short.

Is the boot button in the glove box set to allow access?

You could have a frayed wiring loom that the cold or dampness is playing havoc with during the cold/wet months, that or possibly water/moisture is getting into the boot lock mechanism. First thing I would do is check the inside of the boot for dampness or water. Check along the boot wiring loom for wetness as water does travel too.

Boot and inside the lining was grand, no signs of water getting in anywhere. Seems to be something with a certain level of cold though.

I don't think I have a valet button in the glovebox, must check.

Do you know if its only US cars have access port to open the boot from the inside?

Good news its reopened!! a bit early this year, probably with the climate change.

Anyway, would a new rear lock mechanism cure this problem?

you could try spraying the lock with pure silicone spray, a mechanic recommended it as it doesnt attract dirt like an oil spray, i have leak in the boot i cant find the cause of and use it as a preventative measure . spraying the release mechanism seems to sort it
