    Hi,

Does anyone know how to calculate the VRT and the VRT rebate on a Porsche.

The revenue don't have Porsche listed on their VRT calculator.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Take a random figure (usually so far north of the true OMSP as possible), double it, add a small arbitrary number and then double the final figure and you are half way to what the VRT will be....

On a serious note, whatever they try to extort from you, you can refuse to pay (there is references to this on a car forum I'm a member of - this was a Jap import), definitely appeal the figure they pull out of the air and you can further appeal if you feel the value is too high.

I imported a car from Japan in Aug '16, was charged a laughable amount. Appealed it and got 33% back. Appealed it again and got a further 16% back.

Out of interest, what Porsche and what year?

If it’s for export so surely that’s a win if they overvalue it?

AFAIK if it's not on the website they'll have to assess it.
If your buying you'll have to buy it, and then get is assessed, when they will come up with a nice chunky VRT bill.

Not sure on the selling piece, but if you can try get the market value of the car, then the CO2 you could make a rough estimate at the rate. But it would be rough and they well can be much over/under.

It's a risky game when importing.

Not from what I've heard. The VRT rebate is usually a fraction of the original rate charged

I imported a Porsche myself in June and know of at least 4 others. Model and year is important to know.
Ballpark figure is to go to Carzone, seatch for a similar car and VRT will be about 30-35%.

All, thank you for the help, it's much appreciated.

I exported a BMW 4 years ago and it wasn't listed on the Revenue site so I had to bring it to the NCT centre and get it valued.

I will have to do the same with this car, but i'm trying to get an estimate to see if it is worth advertising the car in the UK to begin with.

It's also very hard to price the car in the Irish market as there are no other similar cars for sale.

Here is the car in question - https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/porsche/cayman/used-2016-161-porsche-cayman-caymen-s-dublin-fpa-276390352206249

The OMSP is the figure you go on, so if you’re say importing a 2013 Porsche whatever, you pay x% of the OMSP based on the emissions. If you’re exporting an identical car, the OMSP is the exact same, the rate of VRT is the same, and the VRT amount is the same (less the €200 admin fee)

Obviously, the VRT rebated now would be less than the amount of VRT paid when the car was new as the OMSP has reduced in the meantime.

From my personal experience, I paid over €3k on an import and sold it to an overseas buyer less than 6 months after, the rebate was less than €1k. That is just my personal experience.

That would be unusual as it would suggest the value they put on the car dropped by a half in that time.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand your question?

Who hands that kind over money over privately?

Not all cars over a certain amount are sold by a garage.

I think i'm missing your point.

Agree on that. Not the first car being sold privately in that price range.

I misread your initial question and thought you want to import one and know the VRT. Not too sure about the rebate when selling abroad.

Out of curiosity - how come it's as high as 30-35%? I thought VRT was 13.5% of OMSP?

    It goes on the emissions.

13.5% is for CAT B vehicles. CAT A vehicles go by emisions.
