    Hi,
I am looking for a mechanic to replace the ECU in my Hyundai i30.
    It's a 2008, classic petrol model.
First of all, how much would it be to replace it with a used one and also if I was getting a brand new ECU?
    Thanks in advance.

Was the ECU already diagnosed to be bad?

I suggest getting a quote from a local dealer first so you know what what you need to beat.

That's why I'm here :D The ECU has failed. He's quoted me 2k but the car is probably worth that!!

A main dealer could easily quote 2k for supply and fit of an ECU which would be the going rate for them.

A main dealer isn't the best place for a car and repair like that. You'd get a second hand ECU for €150-200 and fitting and coding for around the same again. The only issue is the second hand ECU may be no better than the one you have and you will get no warranty with it, but given the price of the new unit, this option is worth a roll of the dice.

This isnt too specialised a job, any half decent independent mechanic should be able to do this for you, just ring some garages local to you.

Thank you - yes this sounds like a quote from a main dealer but this is from a local mechanic. I called around to another one and I got a completely different price.
I would take the chance with a used ECU due to the price for sure.
    Thanks again.

These guys are in the pale but possibly you could remove the ECU and send it to them for fix. Ring them and check if it is possible/price.

Ok, so after all the scare mongering about the ECU, it wasn't the issue at all.
I had to get the battery and main fuse replaced. How much should all of this have cost? I paid 250€. I thought it was steep considering I paid much less to get a battery replaced before.

There is labour in there too.
Battery is probably 100 or so and the main fuse is not much.
However it could have taken a long time to find the culprit so considering you were looking a more than a grand and ended up on 250 I think you got lucky.

Did you ask the mech about how long it took to diagnose?
Maybe he needed to repair the fuse box, and not just change the fuse?
Tbh, it's a guessing game without all the info.

Diagnosing electrical faults takes lots of time and to be honest I think you are lucky they found the root cause instead of charging you for a new ECU only to find out that the same issues are occurring!
