It seems this tweet from March 2016 tells us at least tax is detected
ANPR detection Limerick. Tax July '15. Annual rate €1809 euro.
25000kms covered since June 2015 as per NCT disc

I for one, welcome ANPR. Saves time setting up checkpoints for tax/insurance checks.

I bought a van recently which had no tax, I met a garda transit van on Rathgar rd about a week after I bought it, and they turned around and stopped me regarding the van not taxed , APNR definitely being used

So from my post with the tweet and the post above it seems tax is definitely scanned with APNR.

One of the Isuzu D-Max pickups was kitted out with ANPR, got a demonstration in 2012.

    Been around since then

Yeah APNR has been around a while, the question is if and when they scan for tax and NCT.
So tax seems to be scanned for since 2016 at least

ANPR is around since 2007 or not long after.

Plenty of focus,Mondeo and vectras were kitted out.

They tried the insurance but it logged a huge number as having no insurance so they had to stop that as they took cars that turned out to be covered.

It's a difficult system to run as lots drive on extension of insurance so car may not have insurance but the person driving has enough to cover them to drive it.

Tax has been linked a long time and well before 2016.

NCT is another that will show up.

If you see an i30 you're safe as they can't take the equipment as dash is too small.

Most traffic corps or now roads policing units have anpr.

Land cruiser,Avensis, dmax, ranger, focus,Mondeo, vectras, insignia, i40, BMW 530d, X5, Volvo few models, Audi Q7, Forrester but not many if any left these days, I'm sure I've left out a few still going that were fitted from 2007 approx onwards.

I got stopped in January 2014 in Carlow, on a car I'd just bought and was driving it home.

So that there ANPR has been around a good while.

All vehicles fitted with ANPR camera systems will be able to identify vehicles as being stolen, untaxed, suspect, cited as connected with terrorist suspects, crime groups, drug trafficking, people trafficking and/or persistent offending.

How does this work saw if you buy a car off a drug dealer which was known or if the previous owner was a repeat offender?

Does the database reset once a new vlc is issued I wonder

It would be updated but nothing stopping marker still on it as they could well pretend to sell.

In the UK they would have to put in a request.

They have been doing so, for the past few years.

Limited to some (not all) traffic cars, and certain specialist units.

The regular joe soap won't have to worry about specialised units, they're not looking for tax, nct or insurance... there are bigger things.

To clarify around 160 cars are currently fitted with ANPR (all of which have speed detection as part of the ANPR).

ANPR systems do check for NCT, ANPR can detect motor tax, but is not currently used for such (since mid 2017) for prosecutions due to legal evidential matters which were flagged by the Attorney General early last year.

New/amended legislation is required to enable use of the ANPR system for motor tax prosecutions.

It doesn't. I bought a car from someone who had just lost their license (did not know this when buying). I was stopped twice in the first week I had it with ANPR. Must have updated the status on their end after the second time because I haven't been stopped since.

Costs money they don't want to be seen to have.

Or makes work for RPU that'd rather just cruise about between calls.
