Coincidence?

My wife brought her car for a service today. Mechanic did the necessary (oil, filters etc.). He said the tracking was off and she needed two new front tyres. Replaced the tyres but was too busy to do the tracking but agreed a time later in the week.
work she tried to start the car but everything was dead. The mechanic came out and said the alternator was fu@ked.

Could it be complete coincidence that the alternator died straight after a service??
My gut feeling tells me there must be a connection but I can't figure it.

    Any thoughts?

Sounds like he may have left the ignition on and drained the battery and is now trying to cover himself....... Could also be a co-inkeydink

If this was the case he could just jump start it and all would be grand. Id say its just a pure coincidence.

You can check the alternator yourself if you have a voltmeter.

Or if the car won't start again it may just be the alternator as the alternator is the thing that recharges the battery when driving the car.

What causes an alternator to fail? Time alone? Or can one do something wrong?

    Magic :)

Joking aside, it just wears down like other engine components that has moving parts. Usually the brushes.
