Buying a used car from dealer

    Hello

I am about to buy a car from a dealer and the NCT is going to be up in march.

My question is if it fails should they fix it? as on donedeal it states

    Buying from a dealer
    • When you buy from a dealer you are protected by the 1980 Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act. You have the same consumer rights whether you’re buying brand new or second hand.
    • If you find a fault with the car after you buy it the dealer is responsible for repairs.

Get them to NCT the car early before you collect it. Not that a test guarantees it’s a good car, but it’s a start.

I think the statement that you have the same rights buying new or used is a bit confusing. A new car would have a manufacturers warranty which would be in addition to your statutory rights, also a used good would not be reasonably expected to be in as-new condition, so don’t get your hopes up.

Get the dealer to NCT it now as part of the sale. I wouldn't be buying it from a dealer with such a short NCT.

If I got the dealer to make a deal written on paper that if it doesn't pass they have to repair it?

How long of a warranty is the dealer offering?

It's a lot easier to get dealers to fix things before they have your money than after. The fact that they haven't volunteered to sell you the car with a fresh NCT as part of the sale would suggest to me that maybe you could have hassle getting them to sort things afterwards. I'd rather they NCT it now.

Your buying a car from a dealer and you don't know what sort of warranty comes with it or haven't asked?

Did you have the car checked by a mechanic as it sounds like you are a novice at this and open to being stung if you don't do your homework. Doing proper checks before hand can save you a lot of hassle later one and some dealer warranties are not worth the paper they are written on or the worry and stress endured trying to chase them to resolve things.

Do you have a link to the car's advert?

You see i'm getting the car on finance so i'm only waiting for the finance team to reply. And i thought since the dealer is doing finance i thought it would be fine.

Any half arsed dealer working out of a shed can offer you finance so don't assume the car is legit based on that alone. The method of payment has nothing to do with whether the car being sold by a dealer is good or not. Either way he/she will get paid. You still need to have it checked over by someone who knows what they are looking at. I wouldn't buy it without a fresh NCT either. What happens if it fails on something major and the dealer decides he/she won't fix it? If the dealer has confidence in the car passing, has nothing to hide and is honest then they should have no issue putting the car through the NCT as part of the sale. You also need to find out what is covered under the warranty before you sign up to buy it as some of these used car warranties are worthless.

Depends on the age of the car.

New NCT and a 3 month warranty is fair on anything over 5 years old or so.

3 month warranty would be standard on an 8 year old car. But time limit is only condition a warranty can have. Some have a mileage cap also, whichever is reached first and they might only only include the engine and gearbox.
