looking to get a vasectomised ram. How does this work, are there anyparticular breed that will work well for this? I want to tighten up my lambing spread next february. I am off for 12 days in mid feb so want to get 90% lambed that week. Now i have 5 ram lambs that i am finishing, one is still not great finish on him although he is 45 kg but a bit thin so prob only kill out around 17kg. should i leave this lad behind ang get him vasectomised and use him for this job, hes a charrolais out of a mule ewe. so dosent look llike a real prize ram but does this matter for the job im doing?

Mod notw: Hi Dickie, I'll move this into the sheep forum as they would have more experience of vasectomised rams there.

Get the ram lamb done the harness will surely fall off. Dorset are best I find as they breed year round anyway and are always ready for ewes charollais cross is probably ok
    two options
1.Teaser in for 16 days and then turn in entire rams.
    2. Raddle teaser and when you have the number of ewes cycling that you require turn in entire rams
Extra ram power is probably needed when mating teased ewes a slight increase in lambing percentage might be seen due to mating ewes on second cycle.
Ewes must be kept well away from entire males prior to introducing the teaser for maximum effect. (out of sight and smell)

Found the no mate harness great last year & ive bought another one. No fear of it coming off if put on properly

Really tightened up the ewe lambs for this spring lambing

Must add I got a ram lamb cut a few years ago, he took an infection and his balls swole up and I got him killed before he died

He could've been overfed, If he was mine I'd keep him until the season, ie July and test him again.
I wouldn't use him as a teaser unless he was 100% infertile,
You should be entitled to get your money back from the breeder if he's infertile

Ya theres no problem with the breeder in fairness.she will provide me with a replacement.was tested mid december 6 months after purchasing him so overfeeding would be unlikely no?shes not one for overfeeding rams .vet said sperm was very bad.as good as sterile was her words.prob best to give him another test come july.hes a nice ram be a shame to factory him
