Will my test go ahead?

Got a last minute driving test for Friday. Unfortunately at the moment my car sometimes "squeals" when starting off - already had it booked in for a check/ service with my regular garage next week, I'd imagine it needs brake pads changed. Will this be a no go for the test? Very worried now as have been waiting for this test for ages.

As long as tax nct and insurance are valid you should be ok. Best of luck.

Yes these are all fully up to date. Tyres only 6 months old and in good condition and all lights working properly too. Thank you!

Does the "squeal" go away after you drive for a bit?

Yes, it's only when pulling off for a few seconds. Then it goes away and the car sounds perfect, runs smoothly etc

Edited to add: there is absolutely no squealing or squeaking or anything when I brake while driving.

Fan belt was only changed last summer, but it could be as it is that exact noise, I'd only discounted it as it replaced relatively recently.

You could try some talk powder on it. Then give it a shot.

I mean it could be any number of things. Belt, tensioner, pulley, it could be a sticking brake caliper, sticking handbrake drum etc etc. But given what you have said I wouldn't worry about it for the test. It would be wise to get it looked at sooner rather than later I reckon.

Thanks for your reply and the reassurance about the test. I have it booked into the garage next week for a full check and service - hopefully it won't be anything expensive, joys of driving!

Be sure to explain to them exactly the problem when you drop it in. Just to make sure they diagnose it.

Best of luck with the test.

I was in a similar position to you recently. The clutch in my car is going so it shudders a bit sometimes taking off and I was pretty worried about going into the test with it like that. My instructor was torn about whether I should mention it to the tester or not incase they might think that the issue was me controlling the car rather than a mechanical issue.

I did my test in it last week and I decided not to mention it to the tester. It shuddered a few times during the test, he never said a word about it, I didn't get any marks that would've related to it and I passed. I'd say you'll be fine.

When the tester gets in the car and tells you to move off, check your mirrors really carefully being super observant and caring for other road users.then rev the car to five and a half thousand revs, pull first gear and pop the clutch pulling a sick burnout, leaving at least an inch of burnt rubber on the road.
With the sound of burning tyres the tester won’t even notice the sound of the squeaking.any corner worth a drift then be sure to give her a whack of the handbrake and keep the footeen planted, just to show you are keen.tell the tester she’s the kind of car that needs to be punished.tell them it’s all she understands.
You be sound then.pass with flying colors and the squeak will be a distant memory.best of luck.
