It's 14 dollars each or a lot more if you fall onto the clutches of one of the fake sites.

Be sure to use the official site ..... https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

I think it was ay least 72 hours before travelling. It will tell you on the application.

They're usually quite instant, but I think they say at least 48 hours in advance.

I tend to do it 2 weeks in advance just to be super safe, it lasts for 2 years so sacrificing 2 weeks isn't too terrible.

Can I ask a quick question on this. I’m travelling in April so just getting it out of the way.
When I scan in my passport, so take a screenshot of it, and my barcode is reading, it puts several extra letters on my name at the end.
    So it’s tinkerbell C QQA
Any ideas what I do with these? They are not written in my actual passport. And I don’t want to just delete them.

Are you on the right site? I don't recall ever scanning my passport for an ESTA...

The passport number is on the photo page and is perforated into the bottom of every page. No scanning should be required.

I can input manually, it just says it’s better to do it this way. I just don’t want to get over there and something to be wrong

The scan function is just to save you filling out all of the details, so possibly it is picking up something in the photo and mis representing it. If it's not working properly just input it manually.

It actually is not better to do it that way. I would manually input the number from the photo page and ignore the machine readable stuff at the bottom of the page.

The scanners they use in the airport are industrial grade machines which cost thousands, your home printer/scanner/copier is a budget heap of crap in comparison. I would not use it for this purpose.

Thank you folks, I did input the details manually and it was all authorised.

Just a side note - I did a group of 4 ESTA's a few weeks back for a flight from Canun to Dublin via the States, Although the kids passports expire in April 2019 the wife got them renewed to be on safe side of arriving in Mexico in November and had to get two new ESTA's for these as the passport numbers differ. The lesson for me, don't do them too far in advance.... ;-)

Going to resurrect an old thread for this one

There's a question on the esta asking "Are you a member of the CBP entry program?" I've had a look online but seems unclear

Are Irish citizens to say yes to this? And if so, where do I find my PASSID/ Membership number?

    Thanks in advance

As far as I am aware not you cannot. This refers to Global Entry which is a system of expedited entry into the US which you are required to apply for. Irish citizens are not eligible for this as of yet.

If you Google 'cbp entry program', the very first hit is this website ....

    https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry

    Where it states ......

'Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interview before enrollment.'

    Which should answer your question.

You need to apply for a visa, you will probably never be eligible for ESTA.

I'd start thinking about gathering written citations from local community leaders and your employer to say that you have been an upstanding and law-abiding member of the community since the conviction.

I have a letter from the guards stating it was a fine I got over 20 yrs ago

Can't rely ask my employer he doesn't know about it

OK but it's still a conviction for drugs and you'll have an uphill battle to get a visa.

Your employer doesn't need to know that you have a conviction for drugs, you can tell him/her that you overstayed on a previous visit, which is why you are not eligible for ESTA. And having a letter to say that you're in a permanent job will help to get a visa. So just ask him/her for a letter stating that you've been employed since so and so date.

A single conviction for drugs would be spent by now anyway and not be disclosable - the problem here is that you've told them... Doubt there's any way to try claim it was an error as it's quite a specific thing to have made an error about!
