    Howyah,
Anybody know if I could buy a recording saorview box that I then watch the recordings from it on a different (DLNA capable ) telly?

I need a saorview box for the telly in the kitchen .. and was thinkin I'd get a recording one..

But twould be great if I had the option of watching (say a six nations match) on the main telly in the sittingroom if the humour took me...

Maybe there would be a freeview HD box around that does it?

    Thanks

for a freeview box you are limited to either Panasonic or humax

having the humax I know it doesn't have dlna but I wouldn't be qualified to speak on the Panasonic

A bit of work to set it up but possible.
I've set up a raspberry pi in the attic with a few usb tuners for freesat and saorview.
Put LibreElec on the pi and then enable the TVHeadend server addon. You can then use Kodi with the TVHeadend client add-on from any device to watch and record TV/sat. All the recordings save to a hard drive connected to the pi and can be watched on all connected devices.

There were also two boxes by Wetex called Play and Openelec that had tuners built in. Not sure if they still available new but might be worth checking. You can put LibreElec on those too.

    Thanks folks,
Vidcon.. thats interesting.. might finally find a use for that raspberry I got for christmas a coupla years ago...

One of Johnboy1951's links there had a post suggesting a similar approach with Tuner cards on a PC.
And there seems to be some options if using an Enigma 2 box...

I'm in the market for an Enigma2 Combo box anyway.. so might pursue that a bit further.. (torn between an Edison OS Mega and VU+ Ultimo...) .. to see if I could do something that way...

    Thanks again..

All the enigma 2 boxes can be setup as a DLNA server and record.

I think you might have issues getting a generic Freeview/Saorview box to work as I believe that recordings are encrypted for licencing reasons.
A separate device wouldn't be able to decrypt the recording so it wouldn't work be able to play the file.

Ohh right.. yah... the english freeview boxes apparently encrypt the HD signals from what I'm reading...

I really think I have to just get on and decide on an Enigma2 box... I've been noticing a few android equivalents arriving on the scene lately.. so have been slow to commit...

Think I need to start asking more about Enigma2 boxes.. like.. whats the best you can get? Is it a dreambox ?? or a Humax ? or what??
Will have to spend a bit longer on the forums reading around.. looks like those WOS guys have a better range and cheaper...
    Hmmm...

The VU+ boxes tend to be the best and most expensive.
I think the Ultimo 4k is their top offering at the moment.

I am looking at a similar setup to yourself (new build) and am thinking of getting the GigaBlue UHD Quad 4K which has similar specs.
It also has SAT>IP and FBC tuners. I think this might need a Unicable install to get full use of the FBC tuners.

I was thinking the Gigablue would be hooked up to my main TV and handle all the recordings.
My other TVs would have DLNA and IPTV clients (either via android box/RPi or maybe a SONY TV with built in Android).
They would just need to be connected to the local LAN to play all the channels/recordings I need.

    Ohh cool...
thanks for that... would just love not to have to worry about recordings interfering with watchin live.. so what is that 8 tuners somehow? (is that an octo lnb needed so?)

    Whats Unicable by the way?

Was thinkin of buyin from the WOS guys? They seem to be well priced...

Someone on their forums mentioned the https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/tiviar/tiviar-alpha-plus
    Supposedly a steal..
    Wonder is it responsive enough...

I have to more reading myself on all the possibilities but I am still a few months away from pulling the trigger. I'll have to see what is available at that time.

I think Coaxial delivers one signal only. Unicable can deliver multiple signals to different endpoints. So I think a single cable can deliver a SAT signal to 8+ tuners.

The hardware specs on the Tiviar look great for the price.
Another box in the same price range with similar specs is the Formuler F1 Twin. It seems to get a lot of good comments on boards.

Interesting.. so.. do you know whats needed for unicable?
Is it like.. an octo lnb and wires off that to a box that combines em to one cable and then that one cable to the VU ?

A Unicable II LNB has one coax connection.
Through that it can provide signals for up to 32 tuners (I don't know of one that provides more at present).

There are receivers with multiple tuners which all work from just one coax cable.
The cable can also be split and fed to other receivers.
The receivers MUST be Unicable II compatible to facilitate this.

    http://www.inverto.tv/lnb/192/unicable-ii-programmable-40mm-lnb-with-32ub

Lots of information out there about this.
Some of it will refer to the previous Unicable standard - Unicable I

There are also other Unicable II LNBs which provide signals for less tuners, such as 8 or 24.

Some receivers available are capable of use in Unicable or standard mode.
For instance TBS tuners can take 2 or 4 coax cables from a standard LNB or a single cable from a Unicable LNB.
Also there are receivers like this which can also be used in similar manner ..... standard or Unicable

I hope that provides sufficient info for you to research this further. ;)

    Thanks very much Johnboy1951.
I'm just hanging around at home (in pain) to go in for surgery tomorrow.
Once thats done I should have time to read further on your excellent info.
I do appreciate it very much.. its a whole new idea for me. had no idea unicable existed.
Always struggled with why we had to have one cable per LNB unlike an aerial... so this is fascinating...

Thanks again, I'll try to get up on this when time allows..

Good luck with your surgery ;)

Once you know what to search for you will find plenty.

The HTPC section of Boards also has some threads concerning this.
