Toyota Avensis power steering pump

    Hi everyone.
I think the power steering pump needs to be replaced in my Toyota Avensis.
The steering has become almost impossible to operate. There is no fluid leak. There isn't any noise from the belt.
The car is a 1.6 petrol, year 2000 model.
Any doubt that it is the pump?
Is it a major job to replace the pump?

    Is fluid dark/black?
You could try flushing the power steering fluid first. It could be old.

If it is the case that the fluid is old, what do you think the symptoms would be?
It's around 8 years since the fluid was last replaced.

Symptoms is usually groaning when turning, but not always.
Fluid is cheap and you can replaced it yourself.
A turkey baster is usually sufficient to suck out the old stuff, although there are several ways to go about it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Let's say the fluid is manky, would it cause the power steering to fail completely?

Did a fluid clean out. No change. Does that mean it's the pump that is at fault?
Is there anything else that I need to replace as well as the pump?

could be the pump or could be the steering rack some of the tips on buying the 03 to 06 years avensis was to check power steering operation before buying it can be the pump or often the steering rack itself. Probably best to pop into toyota dealer and have them check it.
