Local Council should be your first stop. They have/had grants for home improvements. You could also have a look at www.seai.ie to see what assistance is available from them.

If person is getting fuel allowance, everything is available free in term of heating systems.

All I know is an elderly relative of mine applied to Seai under better energy warmer homes scheme and surveyor came out. Looked around and told him what he could get. The web site appears to refer to smaller items however they are currently fitting out relative with new oil burner, oil tank, rads to whole house, new cylinder, and all labour. In addition to this, they are doing external insulation to the majority of the house where old stone walls exist. I believe the surveyor had to seek permission to give go ahead to the external insulation as it was not usually allowable.
Relative is on fuel allowance but did not apply to any special trial scheme or has not applied based on any medical condition or anything like that.
All being carried out at zero cost.
House currently had expensive to run electric heating that was about 30 years old.

That’s the first I’ve heard of anything like this. Are the contractors employed by the council or what way does it work?

It is for home owners, not council renters.

That's right Mick I'm currently working that scheme and it's a great scheme. Do you mind telling me what county your in?? As far as I know it's only rolling out at the moment. Dublin was the pilot and at the moment wexford cork Tipperary Kerry and Donegal are starting to get them..
It's a deep retrofitting they are doing to these houses. I've seen new heating systems with 250 euros of oil, windows, doors, external insulation and attics all getting done to these houses.
And all for free. There's is 21million for this scheme for the next 3 years I believe

Steven, talk to your local councillor, he qualifies for a Housing assistance grant, it goes through the county council.

Do you apply for the work through tender or what way does it work from a contractor point of view Roy?

I'm no pensioner but I recently got a new boiler and got a grant towards the cost.
it was all done through the plumber

It's mayo. They must be pushing it cause he didnt go looking for that specifically just basically applied based on getting the fuel allowance package and all this was proposed for him.

Yep they are the partial grant schemes.
All the better if this pensioner can qualify for full grant.
Considering that they are on fuel allowance, they cannot really afford major plumbing works.

On the scheme there is only about 8 main contractors that look after it all. They woukd of won it through a tender process. I come in to look after the plumbing.. it was hard to get it going right for a while as they were very sticky with certain regulations. Like all back boilers have to be disconnected and drilled.. fire barriers for oil tanks.. No plastic piping allowed either but they have relaxed on that now after they got in writing of a 50 year warranty but definitely no push fit fittings..
The HSE are also pushing for this for people with disabilities or health problems.

Hmmmm.....I doubt that. Im certain that the warmer home scheme covers , cavity wall insulation, Attic insualtion, draught proofing low energy light bulbs amd lagging jackets. This is only for people in receipt of certain payments.
