Advice on what to look for

So, my annual mileage has changed this year to approx 24000km, possibly dropping to 20 as the year goes on.

I currently have a 1.3 diesel, but I'd really like something livelier, preferably with the ability to tow a trailer with 2 motorcycles on it on a handful of occasions.

I was thinking of looking at a petrol 2.0/2.5 Subaru forester/outback/legacy.

Should I make the switch to petrol now or keep diesel as an option?

Anyone got any suggestions for something thats fun to drive, got decent poke, and wont be a nightmare on insurance?

I've no size requirements really, I just want something 1.6 or bigger. I'm only looking at manuals though.
