Timing belt

Is 600 including vat a competitive price for timing belt and water pump change from main dealer?

    Megane 1.5 dci

Is it worth looking at an independant? I do 1000km per week so reliability is huge concern.

Seems to be around the same price I got quoted for a 1.5 DCI Fluence recently in Cork.

    Did u price any independents?

VW main dealers charge 450e inc 2 year parts and labour guarantee,
    600 seems high to me!

Is the water pump always changed at this point also?

No harm to do it, you save on labour time and if you are driving 1000km a week I would do it.

€599 is Renaults menu price for a timing belt and water pump in any of their range with the 1.5 DCi engine.

I had a guy sell me a car before advertised with timing belt and water pump just done, on inspection could see a brand new belt so was happy enough. Less than 5000 kms later the whole thing seizes up, snaps the belt and ****s the pistons and head. When taking it apart it became apparent that there was a seized bolt on water pump that the guy just didn't bother removing thus causing the engine to seize. Required new engine head, timing belt, water pump gaskets and all associated fluids.

It's standard procedure I think to have water pump done at same time. 600 seems fair enough but I'm no expert either. Belts on a Mondeo can cost upward of a grand including labour so I've heard .

    Off the wall price

Look in your manual, it will (hopefully) state what needs to be done at what interval (miles/time).

Think that price is a bit high tbh, we've a 1.5dci, belt done about 12 months ago, definitely less than €500 with Dennehys in Limerick

They'd be losing my business at the price you were quoted

It was dennehya that said 600.

Have priced another main dealer and they said 360 for the belt alone. Water pump optional for 110 plus vat. So around 100 cheaper. Girl on phone said they often don't change the water pump. For the sake of the 130 quid with the road I am covering prob not worth not doing it.

It's driving well, I have good tyres on, servicing every 6 months or so no point cheaping out on this one.

The Mrs is out in the car at the mo, I keep the service history in the glove box, I'll check the price I paid later & post but I seriously doubt that I paid anywhere near 600, they may have been running an offer

€570 for a 1.6 focus from main dealer

Ok, not so straight forward, you'll have to subtract the other work done on the brakes & I suppose some of the overall labour cost
Tbh if I were you I'd be going with the VW option mentioned earlier, it's a good offer unless Dennehys matched or came close to it

Isn't the vw option just for vag cars though using genuine vw parts? The op's car is a Renault 1.5dci :)

Fair enough, BrownFingers earlier post didn't specifically say VW only so assumed they were offering across all makes

If it's Renault in limerick there's a guy in Hann auto round the back of Roxboro shopping centre.
Dunno what he'd charge for TB but I got a better deal on other stuff with him than dennehys, he said he used to service for Renault and seemed to know his stuff!
I was quoted 600 in Michael Grant and that seems par for the course round Dublin. independent guys might be cheaper etc.

I think it was just for comparison but I don't see the point in comparing too different brands of car on items like this as parts and labour will be different.

True but still worth shopping around even with other main dealers as well as good Indy's, before Dennehys opened in Limerick, there was no Renault main dealer here for a good while, the nearest Renault dealership was in Ennis, Leonards Motors dropped the brand in favour of Mazda or Peugeot, I got a Renault timing belt done by a non Renault main dealer at a reasonable price before

If the OP is interested in a good Indy, I can recommend Seamus McGrath in Sexton street

Indeed it's definitely worth shopping around but compare like for like. Someone getting a belt done on their vw for x amount in a main dealer can't really be compared to a price someone got from a Renault main dealer for the same job on a megane. Parts used will be different and so wil the prices, labour time and rates will also be different.

If getting a qoute from an indy make sure their using genuine kits or else good quality aftermarket kits.

If the price is significantly cheaper it would be the best way to go provided they are using good quality parts.

You made this point earlier, I agreed with you when I said "True" :)

I also agree with your other two points :)

This on a 2.0 Vag in October 2017
Main dealer and all original parts with 2 years warranty. Hard to beat this price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

That's a split 50% price not including VAT?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,065 ✭✭✭✭Odyssey 2005

    Including vat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Can you post a pic including the bottom line of the invoice? The subtotal on those invoices doesn't usually include VAT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,065 ✭✭✭✭Odyssey 2005

Apologies for that. Posted wrong pic. Not much in the difference.

Are they becoming more expensive in labour these days? Bigger jobs?

Got quoted recently for a DW10ATED 2.0Hdi in the UK for £360 including water pump/coolant change.

OP's query was for a Renault 1.5 DCI, Renault dealers price all seem to be around the €600 mark. (Incl. Water Pump)

Water pump /belt/tensioner kit is around €120 from a motor factors. Add in 3-4 hours labour, plus parts mark-up you are looking at around €400-500 with an independent garage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,073 ✭✭✭homer90

Unsure of op's location, but timingbelts.ie are €320 - 340 to change, depending on what water pump is needed.

Check anti pollution filter and engine management lights came on yesterday......

I drove through a flood Friday which I think may be the root cause if the dpf potentially got wet? I motorwayed her today at 4k rpm for 30 mins based on some googling (risky enough I guess). Light are gone off so hoping it just needed regen.......timing will have to wait if there is other problems! I drive a lot but it's at low revs, with 6 forward gears I'd say I rarely get over 1800rpm.

    Fingers crossed!

Got a price from a local Garage in Bandon for €400 incl. Water Pump.
If anyone wants to know the place, send me a PM

700 quid bill to get all the lights off. Some air flap thing that wasn't opening....

Timing will have to wait till next month!

Ouch, was that as a result of driving through the flood? I assume the lights came back on.
