Just back from NCT. Car is 2010 1.6 90 bhp.

The smoke readings are as follows

    Engine temperature was 89 deg

Smoke reading was 9.90 and limit is 1.50

In 2016 the temp was 101 and reading was 0.310

Any ideas of what could be wrong,. Fully set services in November with all 3 filters changed and Castrol oil..

    Thanks
    Roy

How do you drive the car? do you regularly give it full throttle and rev all the way out to the limiter?

Go and drive the nuts out of it on a motorway.

Are you doing short trips around town etc.

Diesels need long drives a lot.

Can honestly say I never go near 4000 rpm!!!

Do a 100 mile motorway run to Dublin Twice a week but stay at 110 kmh.

Thats going to be part of your problem. You need to reasonably regularly accelerate at full throttle through the gears and rev it out to the limiter to keep the exhaust soot down. It is beneficial to your car not harmful.

Small update, mechanic looked at car last night and could not see a lot of smoke. Could find no leaks anywhere.. scan showed no faults. And on test drive had plenty of power and no visible smoke.

Used some dipteran last night and drive nearly 50 miles to work it through. Have an emissions test booked at a DOE centre tomorrow to try and get some proper reading,..

So have you driven it hard to clear it???

Those readings are huge.. I'm surprised your DPF isn't blocked.
A good long drive would help. Though you say you do that regularly, let us know the results of the smoke test tomorrow.

Guy in work had similar as wife drove the car and didn't do many long runs and never gave it any power.

It failed NCT so he was shocked as car was well looked after and low mileage.

It took some explanation but he took on board to drive the nuts out of it and arrive not too early as to be still hot.

    Car flew through.

Classic case of not needing a diesel.

So how did the smoke test go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 812 ✭✭✭Roycropper63

It passed the smoke test in the doe centre.

Had my retest today and it passed with a reading of .86

No parts changed but dipetane and hard driving.

I reckon it was a mistake on first test

    Many thanks for your help

as said before short drives will build up crap inside we use novation powerkleen and see the crap coming out of the exhaust and will notice a boost in engine speed, having used in a 1998 galaxy with 500,000 miles been a taxi and sailed through.
it removes sulphur which others leave behind.
