    Hi folks,
i'm planning on changing the family wagon in the next few months.

    My main query is:
due to the low annual mileage, am i limited to petrol only?
Hybrid could be an option (Prius if we go that route)
Are there any modern-ish diesels that i could consider, that wouldn't be effected by the low miles/short hops?

Given my criteria below, petrol only searches on DD etc give a fairly slim selection..
    Budget up to €4k
Minimum 2007 (to ease up on insurance more than anything else)
    Estate/SUV/medium or large hatchback
    Engine 1.6 - 2.2
    Must be an auto

Our annual mileage is max 10k km, the car is used mostly for short hops, school run etc. Currently the daily hack is an '02 Astra estate, which was a bangernomics purchase a couple of years ago.

    cheers

The majority of 10 year old or newer diesel cars for 4k are going to have helfty mileage on them. That and given it sounds like your driving style and usage don't require a diesel I'd don't see why you would even be considering one.

more trying to widen the net in the slim chance that might be a diesel option out there that would/could suit.
I was thinking that a diesel without a factory dpf might be an option?
I don't mean one that has had the dpf removed, more the few makes/models that never had them in the first place (Mondeo / X-Type fall into this category, i think)

It's not just the dpf though. Flywheel, injectors, EGR valve even turbo can all give problems or just reach the end of their usefulness and replacing any of these can be costly.

You might be better adding a bit more to your budget and try find a nicer petrol car than buy a cheap diesel with a few hefty bills around the corner.
