09 VW Passat strange rattle

Have had a strange rattle coming from the front drivers side of my 09 Passat for about 8 weeks now. I replaced the shocks about 6 weeks ago as they were leaking and I thought this would cure the rattling. Checked all the ball joints and bushings at that time and couldn't see any excess movement or wear. Brake pads aren't loose and they are relatively new.

The noise is a fast rattling when driving over a rough surface. Also if the engine is at low rpm under load the same rattle will be present until the revs pick up. I don't think it's the DMF as it doesn't rattle when letting the clutch out.

I'm out of ideas as to what may be causing it. Driveshaft? CV joint? Engine mount? Anyone know of similar issues?

On a separate note the timing belt was done by the last owner at 160k Kms. Car now has 285k Kms on the clock. Engine is 2.0 TDI CR. Haynes manual that I have recommends a 160km interval for the belt or every 4 years. As I don't know how long in time it has been since the last timing belt change and the car is now 9 years old should I get the belt done?

Have you considered getting yourself an automotive stethoscope - might be useful to you if you believe it's t-belt related. They are cheap enough for a basic one.

I don't think it's the t-belt as it rattles also on uneven road surfaces. I was just wondering if it's time to replace the t-belt anyway?
