Any opinions on what’s the best type of calving jack out there. I have an old square bar type one with moorepark head, the ratchet and bar are worn at this stage.

I bought a new one in November I was going to buy the screw bar type but when I went to pay the fella at the till said that his brother had one and that they slip alot he told me to buy the square type again so I did .... dunno after that . The previous one wasn't used much as I'd a simmental bull rarely pulled a calf tho...

Have a tecnall round one here with a Moore park head. I like it. Don't use it that often thank god. It's a bit lighter than the square one and a bit easier to use on your own at 4am.

What makes it superior to another? Say a technall at half the price.

I think it's because a vink will pull a 747 out of a cow but that sort of power isn't necessary or shouldn't be used.

Vink all the way. The tecnalls gather with dirt more, they are temperamental and will wear and start slipping just at the wrong time. Buy the right one day one and have it finished with. By the way I’ve two tecnalls here that the vet talked me into convincing me I didn’t need a vink as he didn’t have one and both are scrap.

Does anyone having problems with Technall Calving Jack slipping when pressure is on?
I find it hard keeping the jack in place when working on my own. In fact it is almost impossible.

Because sooner or later , like the rest of us, you're going to make a wrong call, and that is the day you want a vink in your hands

Sorry now, but if you are putting that much force on a jack, should you not be calling the vet. Time for a caesarean.

But is it not the head that keeps slipping?

Sorry now, but you're missing the point
what I'm referring to is the occasion that you might have a cow slow to calve and you intervene to assist the cow, when you have examined the cow you have to make a call - either pull the calf or call the vet, so based on previous experience and the cows calving history you decide the course of action , but it does happen that after sizing up the situation and the feet aren't huge and the head isn't huge and it feels like there is enough space you decide that " twill be a bit of a pull but it'll come " but dammit , it turns out that handy head has the body of a weanling behind it , now , the head's out and its coming along but by jaysus the pressure is on , its at this point ,I realise I may have made a wrong call but i'm happy my calving jack is up to the job .

Look, I what you are saying. Been there many times. Too much force though and you damage both calf and cow. I've seen that too.
