virginmedia, re-establishing internet connection

Hi, trying the stick approach to my kids internet usage I've been using some controls on the virginmedia hub 3 - either pulling the plug or using the port filtering rules.
Both work great in shutting down access, but getting back on is a bit hit and miss - sometimes you get back on, other times you can be waiting an hour or more before miraculously you're back.

I've spent way too long connected to the hub looking for clues, but one thing that is reasonably consistent is peeking at the LAN settings there's no gateway value while its disconnected.

Does virgin have some limit on dhcp and you have to wait your turn, or am I misdiagnosing?

VM usually have long lease DHCP allocations, so getting the same IP, even after an hour of being turned off, usually works. It'd need to be turned off for lot longer, maybe 6 hours plus before the DHCP allocation is re-assigned.

So basically I don't see DHCP as being an issue.

The cable modem will need to retrain it's signal, pick up it's config, etc. That can take maybe 1 or 2 minutes, but it shouldn't take an hour to do so.

I don't have the MediaHub, so I don't know how good it is with the it's logging ability. Other modems like the Thomson I have are much better at this and give good info.

I'd suggest asking VM support to check the modem stats and see what's going on otherwise.

I have the vm hub in modem mode, I use a Tplink archer C8 to do all the routing, it has a guest WiFi that you could let the children use and you can use the main WiFi. When you want to you can shut down the guest network. I think that would be better than interfering with the vm hub.

Would generally shutdown for several hours - a quick reboot would never be an issue, nor does the regular 6 hour shutdown seem to be. That's kinds of why I still suspect dhcp.
What little logging there is doesn't indicate any probs anywhere other than a blank gateway.
Regarding bespoke router I was working my way to the "one-armed router" dual network using the ubiquiti edge + pi, but was all getting a bit convoluted. Plus we have an always on wired PC. so total internet block via hub seemed a nice quick solution.
Anyway, I posted this same query in the talkto virginmedia forum, if that counts as support, and am waiting on a response.
