Can anyone give me some advice on whether the following laptop is good value?

    http://www.dell.com/en-ie/shop/laptops/inspiron-15-7577/spd/inspiron-15-7577-laptop/cn57703

I'm technical, but know very little about consumer level hardware. The list price is €1,399, but I can get it for €1180 with the discount and another kickback because of an employee purchase programme operated in work.

Will mostly be used for running a few linux virtual machines on top of Windows 10, and running Visual Studio Code. Not much of a gamer, but presume that card is perfectly capable of running most games at moderately high settings? Civilization, Witcher 3, City Skylines etc.

Will be primarily desk bound, but will be on the road with it occasionally.

    Spec is:

i7-7700HQ Quad Core (6MB Cache, up to 3.8 GHz)
    15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display
    16GB, DDR4, 2400MHz
Dual drives with 256GB PCIe NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive+ 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 with 6GB GDDR5

    Cheers.

I would wonder if 16GB of RAM is enough given you'll be running a number of VMs, although it depends entirely on what you need to run I suppose. I'm almost certain it is possible to upgrade the RAM at a later date too.

The one issue that this system has is it's screen. Plenty of reviews say it's crap. Really bad. It seems Dell cut corners on the display to offer such good spec elsewhere. Now it might be fine for your needs, but it would be worth seeing one in the flesh to make sure.

Otherwise the spec is good. I would be a bit disappointed that it doesn't have 8th generation intel processors. There was a significant performance jump between 7th and 8th gen.

only in the i5 and i7 u chips as they went to 4 core from 2.
HQ chips were already 4 core.
8th gen hq chips haven't been released yet in laptops. they will have H at the end instead of HQ
the 7th gen were already ok.

yes the screen doesn't get a great review but it's probably ok if you try to calibrate it a bit.

for really good screens you have to pay more cash usually.

this one has a better screen

but 3gb 1060 card and 8gb ram. although not a lot of difference in real-world between 3gb and 6gb 1060 cards.

the question is if you're not a gamer why are you buying a gaming machine?

you could get a lighter/more portable ultrabook type machine and spec it up or add ram to bring it up to 16gb with a decent processor like the i5 8250u quad-core.
