Does this car exist? I am told this is what the car I am looking at is but I can't seem to find it on internet (or any 1.2 's listed in the manual )

If it is actually a 1.6 will that make its consumption much higher than it would be if it really was a 1.2?

It doesn't seem to be written on the chassis anywhere either-just "Ford Focus" (there is a "ecotecnic technology" thing behind the boot on the rhs)

There is no 1.2 Ford Focus, there was 1.0, 1.6, 2.0 petrol and 1.6 and 2.0 diesel.

You sure your not confusing it with a Fiesta which would have been available in 1.2 petrol back then?

No, I am fairly sure I was told it was a 1.2 .I am actually driving it for the past week and , petrol consumption seems fairly comparable with the 2005 Ford Fiesta(1.2) that I had but that is just a gut feeling.

It is definitely more powerful than that old car but I was told it was "turbo charged" or some other technical term that I am unfamiliar with.

If it is a 1.6 after all will that affect petrol consumption ?(the actual motor tax is apparently around 285 so that is less than the old 1.2 Fiesta)

The reason it is cheaper to tax is because cars switched from engine sized tax to emissions based tax from mid 2008.

The only turbo petrol engine on the Focus (excluding ST) back in 2012 would have been a 1.0 litre and 1.6 litre(very rare here). They would have had an Ecoboost badge on the boot. There was a non turbo 1.6 petrol sold here also or is it an import?

Could that be the "ecotecnic technology" badge I mentioned in the OP?

Did petrol consumption efficiency improve sufficiently in the 2005-2012 years that I can be relaxed about the possible larger engine size compared to my old 2005(1.2) Fiesta?

I am wondering now if it is possibly a 1.0 (turbo) engine ....

Unless your mileage is absolutely huge the difference in fuel costs will be minimal enough between a 1.2 and a 1.6 focus. Both will be heavier on fuel than a 1.2 fiesta due to being a larger, heavier car.
    But not by much

So the larger engine provides better acceleration and will be that bit sturdier ? (and more expensive?)

It is the chassis weight that is mainly responsible for the rate of fuel consumption?.

There's a bit more to it than that but generally yes you are correct. The details you got from cartell that it's a 1.0 ecoboost is good news.

There has been plenty of talk about them on boards so someone with a bit of knowledge on them might be able to advise you better than me.

It's part of the new generation of small turbo engines that are making petrol cars popular again against diesel.

It should be as economical as your fiesta.

I thought the consensus was that the ecoboost got nowhere near the claimed mpg. That’s not to say it isn’t economical compared to an older Fiesta I suppose. Newer petrols can be quite good on fuel.

The larger engine does not mean better acceleration.

the 1.0L Ecoboost Focus is faster in a straight line that the 1.6 petrol Focus from the previous year, fifth gear tested this a few years ago, link to the video below

the 1.0L Ecoboost is a great little engine, i drove it a fiesta with it recently, it's nippy.

I got that little car in the end.

I have a problem in that it asks me to put a foot on both the clutch and the brake pedal to start the engine (find that incredibly dangerous as if I stall for any reason it takes me longer than usual to restart  )

I suspect (from searches on the internet) that this may be connected to a "hill start" function .

Navigating around the settings is very difficult and I cannot find this "hill start" function so as to turn it off and on in a diagnostic way.

The manual that came with the car seems fairly generic ,applying to different sizes in the range and I wonder whether all features listed are actually there or whether some are "add ons" when the car was bought new.

Is it possible to find a manual specifically for this car and that would show which features apply across the board and which might be added later.?

    I have found this
    http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/catalog/owner_guides/ENUSA_CG3582_FCN_og_201210.pdf

but it is also generic (maybe moreso than the physical one I have)
