    Hi All,

I looked at a black mk5 golf at the weekend. I lifted the carpet to check the spare wheel, toolkit and paint sticker. The sticker was there whilst a little worn. The paint colour was a 'creamy' colour. Should the paint colour be the same as the external colour (Black)?

It's probably unpainted. That's just the base coat / galvanised stuff they put on under the paintwork. They often skimp on painting parts that aren't immediately visible - under the bonnet would be another place you'd see that.

That woild make me suspicions it should be black. Is there not a tray it all sits into as well that your don't have to lift only if you were looking for crash damage, sounds like the tray is missing as well, 2 red flags.

Yes the tray is there with the jack, lock nut etc....

Are you sure it should be black?

Definitely not. VW don't paint the parts you "don't see" properly. Haven't done so for years. Have a look under the bonnet and see what colour is on the underside of the bonnet / around the suspension turrets.

No harm to be extra cautious though at the same time, as usually even though it wouldn't be the shiny black that the rest of the car is painted, it would more often be a dull shade (like an undercoat).

Check for over spray on the car, run in the paint, or a spec of dust under the paint, if you see a spec under the paint anywhere it's been repainted there...going by the age wouldn't be unusual for a wing or bumper to be painted just on wear and tear alone...but if it's on the back it probably got hit there...if your looking at it in daylight you shouldn't see any kind of wave/ripple in the paint...that wouldn't have happened in the factory.

    Thanks for that!
