Hello. I am planing to work in Ireland between April - October, and I would like to come on my own vehicle with Turkish license plates. Is it possible to drive it for 6-7 month in Ireland without registering it or getting Irish license plate?
It is fine if I should pay VRT (I can get it back), but I will need Irish insurance, which is about 4000 eur for foreigners. But on Turkish license plates I will be able to buy just green card international insurance which is about 225 euros.
    Is it even possible?

I saw that page but I am not really sure about 'state resident' and 'non resident' terms. Am I going to be state resident at my first day in Ireland or after 185 days staying in Ireland?

A "State resident" is a person whose normal residence is in the Republic of Ireland and a "non-resident" is anyone whose normal residence is outside the State.

    You are a non-resident.

Are you going to exceed 183 days in Ireland in that year.
If you don't you are definitely not becoming resident, and therefore in my opinion you are allowed to drive your Turkish car.

I might stay more than 183 day but the question is do I need to register car when I arrive to Ireland or after 183 days in Ireland.

In order to drive without registering your car in Ireland, you should be able to prove that you are resident in another country and you are in Ireland temporarily for reason X.

If you have documents showing that you are employed out of Ireland and paying taxes out of Ireland and your placement is less than 6 months , that should convince Gards(police)/custom officers if they stop you.

Be careful about green card insurance as insurance in Ireland is expensive for a reason(pretty big 3rd party cover). You wouldn't want to involve an accident here with a small 3rd party cover as big rewards/compensations are common if you are at fault and injure someone.

In addition I know ones from northern Ireland who got caught by customs who tried to state they weren't working and living down south for more than 6 months. They asked for their pps number and were able to establish that they were indeed here for 6 months +

    AFAIK you need:

    Vehicle Ownership Papers (Ruhsat)

    Greencard (Insurance with EU Coverage)

International Ownership Papers (Uluslararası Taşıt Belgesi)

International Drivers Permit (Uluslararası Sürücü Ehliyeti)

You also need a Carnet (Gümrük Geçiş Karnesi):

    You get those from:
    http://www.turing.org.tr/

Once you have those you are good to go, but I think you'll have problems if you go over 6 months since the clock will start ticking the date your Carnet is issued.

At that point you'd need to return the car to turkey or pay VAT+VRT and Register it.

Also note that Ireland doesn't have a license exchange program with Turkey so that could be an issue also.

    Best of luck !
