Audi recalls 127,000 cars after emissions cheat devices are discovered

    Audi has been ordered to recall 127,000 cars following the alleged discovery of emissions cheat devices.

    The recall was imposed by the Federal Motor Transport Agency, or KBA,in Germany.

    It is said to affect the Audi A4, A5, A6, A7, Q5, SQ5 and Q7 cars.

    According to German newspaper Bild am Sontag (BaS), KBA ordered these vehicles be recalled after detecting “unacceptable shut-off decides” on several new V6 diesel engines which meet current EU6 emissions standards.

    This recall comes almost a year after Audi’s parent company Volkswagen announced the end of its internal probe into the scandal.

    In 2015 VW found itself at the centre of a emission scandal which saw devices fitted to its cars to cheat nitrogen oxide emissions standards in lab testing.

    Some of the cars fitted with these devices emitted 40 times more toxic gas emissions in real world driving conditions.




    Commenting on this latest recall, an Audi spokesman said: “The Federal Motor Transport Agency has now also issued a distinction for Audi models with V6 TDI engines.

    The engine control software for the vehicles in question will be completely revised, tested and submitted to the KBA for approval

    Audi is said to have until 2 February to find a solution for the affected cars.


    It is said to affect the Audi A4, A5, A6, A7, Q5, SQ5 and Q7 cars

    "As we have long suspected, it now looks a certainty that Audi “Euro 6” drivers are also victims.

    "The car industry as a whole has been suspiciously quiet regarding the VW emissions scandal, this latest news about Audi might just be the beginning and other emission scandals might yet come out of the woodwork.”

    It has not yet been confirmed whether UK cars are affected by the recall.

    Isn’t this about the 3.0 V6 TDI which was previously been asserted to be immune from the shenanigans.

    Have an A4 3.0tdi be interesting to see if it's recalled. From looking at the vw recall I think I'd rather leave it be....

    Would it not be better instead of asking the manufacturer to make a fix to instead have the NCT/MOT etc check the actual emissions coming out of these diesel cars is within an expected range like they do with petrols, that way the consumer can chase it up with the manufacturer? I suppose that would make too much sense.

    You see the thing is this...

    The car recognised it is being tested and behaves differently than it would if it were on the road.
    So getting it tested on a rolling road won’t tell you what it’s actual emissions are when it’s on a real road.

    In all fairness it was an excellent idea even to create such a programme. You would nearly pay to have it done to your car to see it pass a test.

    I rekon BMW/Merc and a few others had to be up to something also.

    Or they could do a lap of the centre before putting it on the rolling road, IIRC the defeat is only active till the steering is turned.

    They do laps to get the car into the test centre, I don't think it's that simple. Unless I misunderstood you.

    IIRC The defeat device is that the engine runs lean until the steering wheel is turned. So if they don't stop the car after it does a lap of the centre the defeat device isn't active and the correct reading will be given.

    Anyone know what years of the above models will be affected? A friend of mine has a 181 Q5, are 2018 models likely to be affected also?

    But they do stop the car before the test and turn the wheels few times before the test starts... Makes no sense... The engine remains to be switched on all the way from the parking lot I think.
