Hotel option between Pembroke - Minehead

Hoping for some advice, I am going to Butlins next year. We went this year and the kids loved it so we just booked again.

Doing the same as last year with ferry from Rosslare - Pembroke. Last year the traffic on the M5 was a disaster. We can only book from a Friday in Butlins...

Ferry gets into Pembroke around 1 and then by the time we hit M5 it is 3 or so and it was a disaster. Especially with 3 young kids. I seen alternative route but travel times would be the same.

To get around this I was going to head out on Ferry on the Thursday, stay somewhere and then drive to Minehead on the Friday morning. It also means we get another day in Butlins.

Just wondering if anyone is aware of decent hotels in area? Probably stop in Bristol location or around that.....thanks

I stayed in a Travelodge in Caerphilly, was grand. You could have a look at the Castle on the Friday morning, would avoid having to deal with traffic around Cardiff and Bristol.

Traffic wouldn't normally be that bad with one exception, May and August public holiday weekends. Half the country heads west on those Fridays. May also coincides with school holidays.

UK schools have shorter and later summer holidays, starting the 2nd/3rd week of July until early September, something to keep in mind.

Have you considered the Stena Line sailing to Fishguard instead? It docks at 11.15 so a good hour earlier starting off, you should be well past Bristol before the peak traffic.

    It's around 200 miles so 4 - 4.5 hrs would be a reasonable estimate.

If you are set on staying over then check the main chain hotels, Travelodge are ok for a night, especially if you can get a good rate, but Premier Inn or Holiday Inn are better and not always much more expensive.

Thanks, never thought of Stenaline. That might be option.

Last year we traveled on 1st of September. I guess we might have hit some sort of school return or something.

We didn't get into Butlins till 8 or so

It should be about a 4-5 hour drive which isn't too bad. Previous year I went from Holyhead down to Rockley Park which was a bit of trek :-)

Anyone know what Stena Line ferry is like?
