Is 5k for a 2008 civic about right or mad money?

Recently sold a 07 320 bmw and looking to buy a civic. Was hoping to come up a few years but been keeping an eye on prices the last few weeks may only be able to come up a year or two. Have. Roughly 6k to spend.

I'd be looking at higher mileage cars , as age is nearly more important than Miles especially on resale due to age restrictions on insurance quotes for the next buyer . Don't forget a 10 car is eight years old .

For the likes of a 1.8 on the cheaper tax that would be about right.

Thanks for the input much appreciated. Going looking at one tomorrow so just wanted to reassure myself that I wasn't over spending on it.

I get what your saying about resale also. I'm hoping to have this car a few years so resale wouldn't be a major concern. More interested in reliability to be honest.

From reading on here the civic seems to be up there on reliability.

Recently brought a 1.4 2010 civic in from uk for 5,700 including vrt 1300euros.It passed NCT no bother. 75000 miles and it has caused no hassle since.2010/11 is still 3 editions old , so there is value out there.

This is the car I'm planning on viewing. Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Same spec as mine, the mileage is low and it looks in good news nick. Obviously try and get it for less but the price is fair enough I think.

Wouldn’t be any harm pricing them up north if you’re in Sligo anyway.

That seems to be the going rate.
One you found is among the cheapest on donedeal.

Diesels seems to be going for less.
I tried selling my 09 Diesel last year (so 8 years old car then) for around €5000 and no joy. Got no interest whatsoever, which makes me think that you could probably get diesel for less. (my was highish mileage with 230kkm but with full service history).

However, if I were you and was going to be buying 10 year old civic, I'd rather do exactly as you're planning and go for 1.8 petrol even if it's bit more expensive than diesel.

The prices seemed to take a dip last year but they’ve recovered a bit since for whatever reason.

Thanks for all the input. Diesel wouldn't really be an option for me. Only roughly doing about 10 to 15k kms a year. Mostly short trips. I'm actually based in Limerick so will be a nice spin up to sligo.

There is no DPF in the MK 8 with the i ctdi engine so you don't have to worry about that. The EGR needs cleaning now and again but that straight forward. The clutch gives some hassle with slipping but that's it really.
The diesel engine in the civic that age is pretty good.

But it takes ages to heat up, and fuel economy while pretty good when warmed up, is fairly poor when driving on cold engine.
If OP is doing mostly short distance driving, then he's very likely to achieve better fuel economy on 1.8 petrol.

Not to even mention cost of clutch for €1.8 is around €200 or €650 for diesel with DMF (not including labour).

I can't see a single reason for OP to go for diesel option in his circumstances.
€110 savings per annum on motortax on diesel, would be very quickly washed away with maintenance cost, and much higher depreciation on diesel car than petrol.

I think they even further down, and cars which were advertised for €6k last year, now seem to be advertised for €4 - 4.5k

I would not rule out a civic diesel. The chances are the clutch has been replaced on a 10 year old car. Give it welly on a test run and see if it slips. Also I know one person with the clutch slipping but he takes it easier on it and now he rarely gets the clutch slipping.

You can really forget about depreciation as the car is 10 years old and if he is keeping it a good while then that's the end of the car either petrol or diesel. If what ye guys are saying that a diesel is got cheaper than petrol, he could pick it up a good bit cheaper. He will beat the petrol on MPG.

He will have no issues with the engine as they are pretty solid, no dpf. Lots of positives for me on this particular car especially if he sees a decent civic diesel

Thats a lovely spec, thats the exact one I was hoping to get. The SE Executive I got still isnt bad though.

5k seems fair enough taking into account what there going for. I paid 3700 for a 07 a couple of weeks back from a dealer.

Did you source it yourself? I was looking at Civics in this price range in Northern Ireland, and the Sterling price was similar to the Euro price, i.e., about £5k STG vs. €5k. Factoring in exchange rate and VRT means they were more expensive overall than buying here.

You could probably buy cheaper (and better) over the water, but the extra travel costs eat into this.

That dealer in Sligo has a good reputation.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I really ruled out the diesel due to a short commute to work daily. I've about a 15km round trip. Most my travel is in the evenings and weekends.

I didn't realise the mk8 civic didn't have a dpf. Just had a look there. The diesels do look a bit cheaper alright. I think I'd be happier in a petrol all the same. I haven't driven a diesel for any prolonged period of time previously.

Hi all, just an update here. Missed out on the civic I linked unfortunately. These don't hang about long.

How good is the 1.8 engine. I've spotted another one I like but mileage is 120k. It has a full service history so from what I'm reading this should be fine. Am I correct in saying this?

Again resale won't be a concern as I plan on keeping the car a few years. Just looking for it to be reliable.

I have 230 on mine and it hasn’t missed a beat or needed any work bar servicing.

230miles and still going strong. If that isn't a vote of confidence for it I dunno what is. Thanks colm.

That’s km. Mate has one with 400kkm but has needed an alternator.
