What's a fair rate to charge a neighbour for moving bales,
Moved a total of 36 about 3 miles, 6 at a time on a bale carrier.
Do I charge by the bale or by the hour?
    Cheers.

Whatever you will charge he will tell you he will pay next week and you won’t get paid. Why can’t you work out what you should charge?

Roughly it took you 5 hours @€;25 per hour =€120 which would be €3.50 /bale .
You could not charge much more really

Then you shouldn't have done the job. If there was going to be a bit of to and fro over the year fair enough but 120 euro for five hours wouldn't pay for diesel and time.

Depends on the neighbour, how close, if he / she ever done you a favour etc.
I helped out a neighbour for free for a few hours last year when he needed help, and he gave me a bottle and a good voucher for something else last Xmas. I got him out of a hole at the time. If it was a next door neighbour I'd go the extra mile, unless there was a history. You never know when you might need a neighbour.

    Thanks
Have decided on 35 an hour.
He's not exactly a neighbour (4 miles away) but a good man that can be called on anytime and he can call me.
Just like keeping things straight is all.
Don't want to over do it or do it for nothing either and he's understanding of that

Well you aren't overdoing it at that. I did this for a mate last year and didn't want to charge him. In fairness he got me a voucher but a few others asked if I'd move bales for them as well so make sure he knows that its friends rates or you could have a lot more cheap runs to do.

A lot of conversations on boards are like that. Usually follows this pattern

Thread starts with "I have this issue/problem. Can anyone help"
and before long you get the answer "you are stupid why do you have that problem"

More than likly that is to a lad using a bale trailer and a big 40-50KM/hour tractor. Big difference between that and a six bale carrier. Lad with those big bale trailers that carry maybe 26 bales on two rows on a long haul are different to a someone hauling with a 6 bale carrier.

Lad with a big bale trailer might haul 36 in an hour and 20 minutes. Lad carried loads for me last year 22/load 10 miles for 80 euro paid by cheque. Now I was allowing him to spike the bales which speeded it up and he could do it when it suited himas in I let him know when to collect load and as long as it arrived within a week I was happy. As well lads that have larger trailers are usually contractors and are vat registered. While this makes no difference to us it means that 10% of the rate goes to the government

    That is very true.
