Boiler help - can I get dual heating controls from my boiler?

    Hi,

I have a Vokera Mynute 14e with a simple timer (it only controls time of day, not days of the week) to control heating which also heats the hot water. I am hoping to install a 3rd gen nest, and it would be great to have separate heating controls for heating / water. I have no other thermostat or programmer anywhere in the house. I've been trying to find out if the boiler I have is capable of this and need a little help...

The service manual (which covers the Mynute 10e, 14e and 20e) includes this wiring diagram for the connection of a Vokera twin channel programmer, which looks like the boiler will accept separate call to heat for heating (5&6) and hot water (3&4).

When I opened the boiler to look at the terminal strip, I saw this diagram :

So a very similar diagram. The way the boiler operates at the moment, its either on (heating and water) or off, obviously implemented here as a switch on pins 1 & 2. As pins 3-6 on the terminal strip have no label, does that imply that my particular boiler does not have the ability to turn on heating and hot water separately? Or just that it isn't hooked up like that at the moment?

If anyone could shed any light on this I'd very much appreciate it :)

The boiler itself does not control the separate heating between hot water and radiators.
That is done by a separate control system involving correct pipework setup, electronic pipe valves (zone valves), thermostats and a separate zone time clock.
By introducing a nest to your current set up you are just changing how you turn the boiler on and off.
Also note, it is illegal for anyone to remove any covers from a gas boiler to access any of the components, including wiring, unless you are a registered gas installer (RGI)

OK, news to me, thanks for that. I got some advice elsewhere and it sounds like i need to have a 3 port valve and thermostats added to the pipes in the hotpress, and then have these hooked up to the boiler. I plan on getting this done through the SEAI grant for heating controls upgrade (so RGI obviously ;)), any idea of how much this would cost? Would it be more than the €700 provided by the grant?

It really all depends on which way your pipework is currently installed.
No point trying to estimate it here as there are just too many variables involved.
Get a few recommend RGI plumbers to look at it for you and then you will know.
It could be as simple as a bit of pipe alteration, or you could be pulling up floors and opening walls, plus the wiring.

Post a picture of the pipework in your hotpress,if you have a valve that isolates the rad circuit its a simple enough job.
If not it will cost alot more

Hope this shows it clearly enough... seems like there's a few valves in here alright. Thanks

when the system is cold close both of the lever valves in the bottom left corner and turn the boiler on.
Check to see if no radiators heat up.
More than likely those two valves are for upstairs and downstairs rad circuits

Very likely those valves are for your radiator circuits, if so then the hard work has been done.
And get whoever is doing it to tidy up the filling loop, thats manky looking.

So did a little experiment and those valves do indeed control the rads, thanks for all the help :)

Anything in particular wrong with the filling loop?
