UPVC - Glazing Gasket (??) Replacement

It's been a job I've been putting off ever since I moved in but noticed that the inside rubber between the pane of glass and actual frame is absolutely withered away in practically every window of my house.

No idea how this happens.. house was unoccupied for a good portion of time so maybe it could be related to that. It seems to be on the inside of all the windows, but the outside is pristine.

Just as a comparison.. this is inside the kitchen window:

And this is from the opposite side outside the kitchen window:

As a result, one or two small portions are missing entirely and is quite draughty as a result.. the quite light window blind can move slightly in windy weather!

I need to get a guy in to replace a hinge in one of the windows next week so just curious about getting these sorted... from a quick Google (I'm fairly unknowledgeable on these matters), they seem to be referred to as glazing gaskets and seem to be pretty easy to replace (from YouTube videos) but would the existing ones need to be ripped out first as they're quite hard to grip as they're in such poor condition.

    Any suggestions appreciated!

Mould and damp eats them away.

You can get glazing tools on Amazon consists of wallpaper like stripper and nylon hammer and some other bits. This is for taking off the plastic strip that holds the rubber gasket in place and therefore the pane.

    Time consuming but doable.

Could do it yourself but why not ask the guy for a price

This is basically 3m type double sided tape AFAIK. Be very careful taking it out as you could easily smash the glazing unit. A long Stanley blade works too. You need to take the beading off and have someone making sure the unit doesn’t fall out - then cut the tape remove the unit and clean up both the glass and frame before reapplying new tape.

That’s how some windows are done anyway.

Unless the windows are leaking I honestly wouldn’t bother.
