    Hi,

Are cam follower replacements on MK5 Golf GTIs critical, and how often should these be replaced?

Are there any tell tale signs that one is on the 'way out'?

    Thanks

They are critical in that allowing one to become too worn will result in your camshaft ****ting itself and leaving you with a very expensive bill. They're not always obvious that they're getting close to being worn, but they're relatively easy to remove and check yourself. However, as the part is only €50 or so, if you're going to remove it to check you may as well replace it at the same time. I've seen varying recommendations for replacement timelines of between 60k km and 120k km. I replaced my own in my old Mk5 at about 110k KM and it was noticeably scuffed but not concerningly so.

Thanks. I'm looking to purchase a MKV GTI and am viewing 3 @ weekend. Other than documented replacement are there any signs if the follower is 'bad' ?

Check for rust on the rear arches,
Check for broken dip stick (14e)
Check all the doors lock and unlock,
Check the running temps at motorway speeds too
