Mutual recognition of penalty points IRL UK?

Is it possible to get penalty points added to a UK driving license if an offence is committed here in Ireland?

I can't find legislation or a clear answer to this online

Citizens Information says that there is mutual recognition of points between UK and Ireland but doesn't supply any framework or legislative information.

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/driving_offences/penalty_points_for_driving_offences.html

So a person driving on a UK license in Ireland - can penalty points be applied to them in Irish law via Fixed Penalty Notice or in court?

Anyone any ideas? A small offence I made may cause major problems with towing insurance for me, where I can't tow on the open policy if I've any (currently zero) in last 3 years. I prefer my UK license as I travel there often and may move back post Brexit so don't really want to surrender it for Irish license as it's unknown what is going to happen.

    Thanks

You'll get the points on your Irish "driving record" for three years after the date on the letter from the RSA. Whether and how that will complicate your uk towing insurance I don't know.

They don't show against your UK record as far as I'm aware (e.g. when you need to hire a car).

Just to be clear- do you have an Irish license and a U.K. License at the same time? Does that mean you have your UK license registered to a U.K. Address you're not living at?

My memory is hazy but I seem to recall doing that is an offence - if you're more than a year out of the country you're required to convert it across. However that may have been to do with driving on a U.K. Licence while resident in Ireland, I'm not sure on the situation if you have both at the same time but I imagine it would make it tricky for points to be applied.

It makes no difference what licence you have, whether it's Irish, UK, Greek or Hungarian.

If you committed offence in Ireland, penalty points are written on your "penalty point record" in Ireland.
They are not attached to your driver's licence, but rather to yourself.

Effect is - that no matter what licence you have, if you got penalty points in Ireland, you will have to declare them to insurer in Ireland.
You don't need to declare them to your insurer in UK.
If you exceed 12 points limit in Ireland, you will be disqualified here.

    Thanks.

The text from Citizens Information is a little bit ambiguous.
