Hi. Myself and my wife got married in October 2016. She earns around 28000 a year and i earn 44000 a year. We want to apply that our tax credits are done jointly. I have a few questions regarding this though.

If i for example take her tax credits would i see a change in my pay every month when i get paid?

How do i claim tax back for the time gone by since our marriage?

    Thank you.

In this example you would not claim her tax credits as she is using them. You could transfer the €6,800 of her standard rate band. That would mean that you would pay 20% on €6,800 rather than 40% so a saving of €1,360 pa.

Thank you for your response. Would i see this €1,360 broken down over the 12 months i get paid or must i claim it back at the end of the year?

It is at done at source meaning you see the changes straight away when you are paid either weekly forthnightly monthly etc

You need to change this with the revenue and provide the updated tax credit cert to your payrolling department so they can update your rate band on their system
